September 11, 2021 11:25 amA foreign multiday fishing vessel carrying a consignment of heroin has been intercepted in Sri Lankan waters, the spokesperson for the police said Saturday. The interception was made last night (Sep. 10) during a joint operation carried out by naval personnel and the Batticaloa police division in the seas south of Batticaloa. According to SPP Nihal Thalduwa, nine crew members aboard the vessel in question were also apprehended by authorities.

The UAE has announced that fully vaccinated holders of valid residence visa will be allowed to come back from the countries previously on the suspended list, starting from Sept. 12, 2021, the Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported. The ICA and NCEMA on Friday said that even resident visa holders who have stayed out of the country for more than six months can now return. “UAE allows return of fully vaccinated (WHO-approved vaccines) holders of valid residence visa, including those who stayed abroad for over six months, starting from Sept. 12, 2021,” the statement said. The valid residency permit holders should be vaccinated with a vaccine approved by the World Health Organization (WHO). On Sept. 5, Abu Dhabi lifted the 10-day quarantine requirement for residents who are fully vaccinated or arriving from a green list country.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Sri Lankan President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has written to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa seeking a pardon for Ranjan Ramanayake. Ranjan Ramanayake is currently serving a four-year sentence after he was found guilty of contempt of court. The Former President said that Ramanayake sacrifices his wealth for the well-being of the people. “As your government had pardoned several others who were imposed with harsh punishments by the court, you would also agree that it is unfortunate for Ramanayake to suffer for a less serious crime,” the letter noted. Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga had appealed from the President to grant a Presidential Pardon to Ranjan Ramanayake.

D Lakshman yesterday (10) as governor of CBSL, State Minister Ajith Nivard Cabraal is to hand over his resignation from his parliamentary seat on Monday in order to be appointed as Lakshman’s replacement mid next week. I was helpless in protecting her and the other elephants being forcibly taken away from Pinnawala, Ishini said in her Facebook post. Ishini Wickremesinghe has reportedly resigned from the post of Director-general of the Department of National Zoological Gardens in protest to returning illegally captured elephants to the alleged smugglers. Sharing a video on Facebook, the elephants being loaded onto the trucks at Pinnawala, Ishini said it was an act of taking away their freedom.“what cruelty it is to take away their freedom for one’s individual interests,” Ishini added.
