ASPI closed the quarter at 9,459.94CSE on an all-time-high record-breaking spree last weekBY Shenal FernandoThe CSE closed out the month of September with another all-time high as the ASPI closed at 9,459.94 (on 30 September), up 39.7% Year To Date (YTD), bringing to an end what has been a historic nine months for the CSE. During the month of September itself, the ASPI went on to break its all-high record four more times. The CSE would go on to break its all-time high record three more times over three consecutive days from 28-30 September. Similarly, on 29 September, the ASPI went up a further 102.03 points to close at 9,434, however, with a turnover of Rs. And on 30 September the ASPI closed at 9,459.94, up 26.17 points from the previous day’s close.

The Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI)-based inflation has decreased to 5.7% in September 2021, stated the Department of Statistics of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL). The decrease has taken place in terms of headline inflation as measured by the year-on-year (YoY) change in the CCPI, which decreased to 5.7% this month from 6% in August 2021. Subsequently, food inflation (YoY) decreased to 10% in September 2021 from 11.5% in August 2021, while non-food inflation (YoY) increased to 3.8% in September 2021 from 3.5% in August 2021. When it comes to the monthly change of CCPI, it is recorded at 0.47% in September 2021, due to price increases observed in items of both food and non-food categories. The CCPI, which is measured on an annual average basis, increased to 4.5% in September 2021 from 4.3% in August 2021.

A contingent of 120 Army personnel of the Indian Army arrived at Mattala International Airport last Saturday (2) to participate in the eighth consecutive iteration of the joint “Mitra Shakti” exercise between Sri Lanka and India, set to begin today (4). Two years after its seventh edition was held at Foreign Training Node in Pune, the eighth edition of India-Sri Lanka bilateral joint exercise, Mitra Shakti, will be conducted at Combat Training School, Ampara in Sri Lanka for 12 days, from 4-15 October. An all-arms contingent of 120 personnel of the Indian Army is participating in the exercise, along with a battalion of the Sri Lankan Army. The seventh edition was conducted at Foreign Training Node, which is located at the Aundh Military Station in Pune, in December 2019. In the seventh edition, a contingent from the Kumaon Regiment of the Indian Army and the Gemunu Watch infantry regiment of Sri Lanka had participated.

“The 31-year-old motorcyclist had knocked the side mirror of the vehicle that the Army officer was travelling in. However, the motorcyclist has refused to be transferred, citing that he is in good health,” explained SSP Thalduwa. A video circulating on social media shows the Army officer being accused by a crowd of people of assaulting a young man until he allegedly “vomited blood”, following a road accident between the pair. SSP Thalduwa added that the three people involved in the accident had been summoned to the Police, where the Army officer was arrested on charges of assault and his driver was arrested for hindering the vehicle movement of the motorcyclist. “The motorcyclist has volunteered to not pursue the case of assault,” SSP Thalduwa further said.

We have already paid the cost for the four million Pfizer-BioNTech doses, all of which will be in the country by the end-October.

The Government should intervene immediately and formulate a programme to ensure that public transport services are maintained even in the prevailing Covid-19 situation,” he added. He further went on to say: “When the number of buses in operation decreases, there is a congestion in the running buses. So what needs to be done is to increase the number of buses running, not to reduce them.
