MANILA, Philippines — Humanitarian organizations are seeking assistance for several areas hit by Typhoon Odette last December, as dengue infections have risen among survivors. In Caraga, we’re seeing a steep rise in dengue cases in Surigao and Dinagat Islands, which are also among the most affected by Super typhoon Odette,” she added. “As a Category 5 tropical cyclone, Super typhoon Odette’s destruction really affected a large population — 12 million people in 10 regions in the country. While the death toll is fortunately not as high as Super typhoon Haiyan’s in 2013, it deeply affected the livelihood and living conditions of survivors,” Dulce said. This makes it even harder to recover from the multiple impacts of the super typhoon,” Oxfam said.

Customs officers have on Friday arrested a salesman of a medicine shop in Tai Wai suspected to have applied a false trade description in the course of selling a proprietary medicine, in contravention of the Trade Descriptions Ordinance. A Customs spokesman said they have received information alleging that the salesman was suspected of making a false claim in the course of selling a medicine by saying that it was a particular brand of medicine. “However, the customer later found that the medicine was not the brand specified by her,” said the spokesman. It is understood that the falsified medicine’s package, name, as well as the medicine itself are similar to an authentic brand of the medicine. Under the Trade Descriptions Ordinance, any person who, in the course of any trade or business, applies a false trade description to any goods commits an offense.

In Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), there is a 30 to 40 percent uptick in Covid admissions in public hospitals. Gastroenterology and hepatology experts have raised a “growing concern” over the increased risk of fatty liver disease among Filipinos who gained weight and developed unhealthy habits due to quarantine restrictions in the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic. About 10 percent to 20 percent of Filipinos have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), dubbed the “silent epidemic” afflicting millions globally, Philippine College of Physicians president Dr. Diana Alcantara Payawal said on Thursday. But those with preexisting illnesses, such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension, are also at risk because fatty liver is a “multisystemic disease.”2 typesThere are two types of NAFLD, a condition caused by fat buildup in the liver: the nonalcoholic fatty liver, and the “more advanced” nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH. According to Tripon, lifestyle plays a key role in developing fatty liver, which often has no symptoms in its early stage. These patients are at risk for fatty liver,” she said.

The Asian Migrants Coordinating Body has urged the government to come up with measures to limit the working hours of live-in domestic helpers, so they won't be overworked and exploited. Leonita Arcillas Quinto came to Hong Kong in late 2016 to work for a family of four at Mei Foo and was said to have complained about her working conditions. Mr. Villanueva told RTHK on Thursday that many helpers work between 11 and 16 hours a day and that exploitation can occur because they are forced to live in their place of work. "This is not the first time a migrant domestic worker has died in Hong Kong while at work," he said. This is where the government should pursue, from this particular case, to look into the situation of migrant domestic workers who are mostly overworked."
