This come-on was irresistible, for in those days the English language still held much fascination for me (it still does, but in a different wavelength now). It did, for it started me on a love affair with the English language that continues to this day. It was happiness enough that each time, I could firm up my grasp of yet a few more strange English words and make them mine to keep. That Dr. Funk's book greatly helped me widen my English vocabulary would be an understatement. In pleasing contrast, Dr. Funk's most beautiful words in the English language were these 10: "dawn," "hush," "lullaby," "murmuring," "tranquil," "mist," "luminous," "chimes," "golden," and, "melody."

On that day, the oasis city of Turpan west of the Flaming Mountains recorded temperatures at 31 local weather stations above 45C, with the maximum at five of them breaking above 50C, according to state media on Wednesday. MIF

MIFI guess it would take an economist to understand the workings of the Maharlika Investment Fund, as it seems to be beyond ordinary folk like me. The MIF is supposed to fund big ticket infrastructure projects instead of using funds from the national budget (so there is no need to raise taxes, the economic masters claim). But infra projects aren’t income or interest generating, so how will the “investors” get return on or earn from their investment? Perhaps the answer to that is in the fine print of the law. And as I further tighten my belt and try to stretch the family food budget, I hope we will not be seeing another Senate investigation into an “MIF scandal.” – Rosita Enriquez, Marikina City

GENEVA, Switzerland — The world should prepare to face increasingly intense heatwaves, the United Nations warned on Tuesday, as countries across the Northern Hemisphere reeled from soaring temperatures. "These events will continue to grow in intensity, and the world needs to prepare for more intense heatwaves," John Nairn, a senior extreme heat advisor at the UN's World Meteorological Organization (WMO), told reporters in Geneva. Heatwaves are amongst the deadliest natural hazards, with hundreds of thousands of people dying from preventable heat-related causes each year, Nairn said. Heat is a rapidly-growing health risk, due to burgeoning urbanisation, an increase in high temperature extremes, and demographic changes in countries with ageing populations. Nairn said that the number of drawn-out and simultaneous heatwaves in the Northern Hemisphere had swelled sixfold since the 1980s.
