And the reason is because it connotes “idolatry” in a context that is supposedly known for Islamic religious purity. The Fulani dynasty that was enforced on Ilorin met a Yoruba cultural heritage that it successfully subordinated and eventually supplanted. And yet, that did not thoroughly eradicate the remnant of that Yoruba culture from surviving and multiplying within the crevices of the Ilorin Islamic “purity”. And I concede the virulent role that Christianity—especially in its Pentecostal mode—has played in undermining and negating African rich cultural heritage. It is this openness to others that the Ilorin religious elites must relearn as part of their genuine understanding of what religious sensibility demands in a plural society.

Oil marketers are clamouring that market indicators should determine the price movement of Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol, even if it means the price could potentially reach N700. “If the prices in neighbouring countries reflect true market prices and our own do not, there is still a danger. For Osatuyi, the current price of petrol is a “transitional price”. “Score a goal and not get scored against.” That was Matildas midfielder Tameka Yallop’s light-hearted answer when asked how Australia would go about beating Nigeria, their Women’s World Cup group B opponents, in Brisbane on Thursday evening. But the answer belied the seriousness with which the Matildas are taking the challenge posed by Nigeria. The Matildas are not underestimating their opponents, though, who looked dangerous in a goalless opening encounter with Canada on Friday. It’s about being focused in every moment against them.”Yallop is one of the few Matildas to have played Nigeria before, at the 2015 World Cup in Winnipeg, Canada. We have to be ready for anything and stay disciplined whatever they throw at us.”Nigeria’s preparations for the World Cup have been plagued by pay disputes and a falling out between coach Randy Waldrum and the Nigerian Football Federation.
