The Supreme Court has reserved judgment in the appeal filed by the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, against the tribunal’s judgment affirming President Bola Tinubu’s election. Adopting their addresses, Tinubu’s lawyer, Wole Olanipekun, and his APC counterpart, Akin Olujinmi urged the court to dismiss Obi’s appeal. Presenting his argument, he said, “The issue involving Mr Tinubu’s certificate is a weighty, grave, and constitutional one, which the Supreme Court should admit. Oluwatosin Adeshokan 1 , Chiebuka Obumselu , freelance journalists 2 1Lagos 2Abuja oluwatosin.adeshokan{at}outlook.frNigeria’s politicians have proposed requiring doctors to stay in the country for five years to get a licence, to help stem the tide of medical talent it loses to higher income countries. If passed, the amendment to the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act would require all medical and dental practitioners trained in Nigeria to practise there for a minimum period before obtaining a full licence. Politicians and citizens alike often bring up the average cost of university education and medical degree training as one of the reasons Nigeria’s doctors shouldn’t leave the country. Medical students at the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital vehemently rejected the idea. Withholding licences is “hypocritical,” they told The BMJ, particularly since the government has consistently neglected investment in the country’s healthcare.

Field reports on 2023 elections: The Nigeria Police Force announced that it arrested 781 suspects for electoral offences across the country during the last election. There is an Electoral Offences Desk in the Office of the IGP, Abuja, which coordinated the processing of offences and offenders for INEC’s legal department. Without prosecuting and bringing to a close those glaring offences arising from the 2023 elections, there is nothing on ground to deter prospective offenders in the Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa governorship elections. As a matter of fact, there is more at stake now and more incentive to be crooked in governorship elections than in the last general election. Bayelsa was not spared the spate of electoral violence but the scale was mild, perhaps for the obvious reason that there was no contest for the governorship.

Amid the ongoing crisis regarding the availability of fuel across the country, the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) now stands at approximately N625 to N630 per litre. Oil marketers continue to voice concerns about the mass shutdown of filling stations and the inability to transport petroleum tankers due to the skyrocketing costs associated with importation, lifting, transportation, and distribution of petroleum products. Due to a lack of foreign exchange, marketers are struggling to import petroleum products, compounded by their inability to access products from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), leading to the current scarcity. Investigations reveal that most filling stations within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are either not dispensing products or are selling them in the N625-N630 per litre range. Commenting on the situation, Chief Chinedu Ukadike, the Spokesperson of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), commended the government’s decision to maintain the current PMS price, considering the various crises afflicting the sector.

In our case, we engage in negotiations for minimum wage every three years through collective bargaining agreements. Currently, organised labour, whether in the public or private sector, represents less than five percent of the entire population.
