On Tuesday and Wednesday, a cold southwesterly flow will blanket New Zealand, with an embedded front moving northwards over the South Island late Tuesday and Wednesday, and the North Island early Thursday, according to MetService. This front is anticipated to bring rain to the South Island later on Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as snow to the south and east of the South Island on Wednesday, and potentially the southern and central North Island on Thursday morning. Later on Thursday and Friday, a ridge of high pressure will stretch over New Zealand, although a fresh front may arrive on the South Island late on Friday. There are road snowfall warnings in place by MetService today as cold weather begins to turn rain into snow at high altitudes. A few snow showers are forecast on Lindis Pass (SH8) this afternoon, with 1-2cm falling above 900m and less falling below 700m.

Late last week China announced that they will drop its tariffs on Australian barley imports that have been in place for three years. A week ago these two prices were US$80/bbl and US$84/bbl. A week ago it was at 61.5 USc so -½c down from then. That all means the TWI-5 has basically held at 69.4 which is -30 bps lower than a week ago. A week ago it was US$29,318 so down -0.9% since then.

When the phone eventually rang at her home in the Philippines it was their father calling with devastating news. Two of their children were dead, and a third was in critical condition after a crash in Hororota. She last saw her children on May 25 when they left the Philippines with their father for a new life. The children were also sad to be leaving their mother but “excited” for what lay ahead. “Please help us bring my children to the Philippines so that I can see them,” Gina Dulay said.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said the 67-year-old driver of a Mazda Axela missed his opportunity to overtake a 22-tonne truck in a passing lane. Snr Sgt Bond said the Alexa was clipped by the front end of the truck, causing the car to spin and crash through a fence and down the bank. "Fortunately, the car could not roll any further down the bank as a small tree prevented this." There were diversions in place at the scene while the car was pulled out of the ditch.
