KULAI: A man who was caught pumping subsidised RON95 petrol in a Singapore-registered car has been identified as a Singapore permanent resident. Kulai OPCD Asst Comm Tan Seng Lee said the owner of the vehicle had been found in Singapore following the viral incident. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 108(3)(e) of the Road Transport Act 1987 with regard to exhibiting an altered or tampered vehicle registration number. “The public is reminded not to alter or attempt to hide certain characters of their vehicle registration plate as they please because it is against the law,” said ACP Tan. KUALA BERANG: A lawyer suspected of conspiring with an inmate to smuggle drugs into Marang Prison has been remanded for a further four days from Sunday (Jan 4). Magistrate Nur Athirah Hashim issued the remand order against the 32-year-old man to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Earlier, the suspect was brought to the Kuala Berang Magistrate’s Court at about 9.45am under police escort. KOTA KINABALU: The number of flood victims in Sabah has risen to 498 people from 160 families as of noon on Sunday (Jan 4), up from 315 people on Saturday, says the Sabah Disaster Control Centre and Disaster Management Committee. Kota Kinabalu was declared a flood disaster area at 9pm on Saturday (Jan 3). So far, the Beaufort and Kota Kinabalu districts have been affected, involving nine villages and two temporary evacuation centres. In Beaufort, 316 people from 114 families have been relocated to the Selagon permanent evacuation centre, While in Kota Kinabalu, 182 people from 46 families are sheltering at Dewan Masjid Al Munir in Kampung Darau, Manggatal. The public is advised to remain vigilant as rain and thunderstorms are still forecast in several parts of Sabah.

(Jan 4): Egypt and Qatar signed a memorandum of understanding to boost cooperation in LNG sales and imports, including terms for supplying Qatari shipments to Egypt's Ain Sokhna and Damietta ports, Egypt's petroleum ministry said on Sunday. QatarEnergy said in a statement that the agreement includes supplying Cairo with up to 24 liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes for the upcoming summer. Egypt, the Arab world's most populous nation, has been trying to increase its own gas production and diversify import sources to meet its growing energy needs. Egypt produced 3,635 million cubic metres of gas in October last year, up slightly from 3,525 million cubic metres in September but down from 3,851 million cubic metres in October 2024, according to the Joint Organizations Data Initiative. GEORGE TOWN: A government retiree lost RM1.0024mil to an online investment scam that offered profits of up to 200 per cent, says Penang police chief Comm Datuk Azizee Ismail. The man, 67, got to know a woman on Facebook in August and she introduced him to an online investment scheme via WhatsApp. "He was interested in the investment scheme and was asked to download an app by the woman to register his membership before investing,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Jan 4), adding that the man made 22 payments totalling RM760,200 to six different bank accounts from Aug 8 to Dec 10 and was promised returns of RM7,488,492. The victim was also asked to pay an advance of three per cent of his profits when he wished to withdraw his investment and subsequently made six transactions totalling RM242,200 to a bank account from Dec 18 to 24. He realised that he was cheated when he could not make the withdrawal of his profits and was asked for additional payments for tax purposes, he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for fraud.- Bernama
