SIBU: Three local men aged between 27 and 31 have been arrested to assist investigations into the murder of a foreign national, believed to have resulted from a fight at a hotel here early Thursday (Jan 15). Sibu OCPD Zulkipli Suhaili said police received a report at about 4.22am regarding a foreign man who had died after being admitted to Hospital Sibu. “The 27-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the hospital due to severe head injuries,” he said in a statement. Police later arrested three local men believed to be involved in the incident. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.

PUTRAJAYA: The ongoing investigations involving senior military officers must be completed as soon as possible, given the sensitivities involved, says Tan Sri Azam Baki. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Bak, stressed that he had not received any directives or instructions to pursue both cases. "I humbly say it is our responsibility to complete the investigations as soon as possible, given the sensitivity of the cases due to the military top brass involved. Azam said his officers had to conduct the investigations within a tight time frame. He also does not rule out that more military officers may be called in to investigate both cases.

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 15): The Ministry of Human Resources (Kesuma) and the Johor State Government have agreed to strengthen strategic cooperation in talent and skills development, particularly among youths. Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R Ramanan said in a Facebook post that the matter was discussed during a courtesy call by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and his delegation on Thursday. “The meeting focused on strengthening talent development and the skills ecosystem in Johor in a more structured and impactful manner, in line with the Madani Malaysia aspirations as well as current and future industry needs. “The discussion also focused on a presentation by the Johor Talent Development Council, support for a RM20 million allocation from HRD Corp for workforce training and skills enhancement in Johor, and the expansion of PTPK [the Skills Development Fund Corporation] funding to strengthen the TVET [technical and vocational education and training] agenda as a driving force of employability,” he said. Maersk made the first safe transit in December, followed by another sailing earlier this month. PUTRAJAYA: The Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) has introduced a new information search platform using the WhatsApp application. In a statement on Thursday (Jan 15), LHDN said taxpayers would be able to receive tax updates, payment reminders, notifications on arrears and compliance alerts through the WhatsApp application via their registered mobile numbers. Meanwhile, an enhanced enquiry platform known as Tanya Hafy will replace the previous version, Tanya@HKC, on the official LHDN portal. "This information search feature offers a self-service approach that is more systematic, relevant and efficient," it said. LHDN said the introduction of the Hasil WhatsApp application and the Tanya Hafy platform is expected to add value for taxpayers by improving access to important tax-related information.

On a separate matter, Ahmad Zahid said Dr Muhammad Akmal's proposal to cooperate with PAS was merely a suggestion, adding that only the top Umno leadership can make the decision. "He can present his suggestion to the Umno supreme council when we hold a meeting," he said. In his policy speech, Dr Muhammad Akmal proposed the formation of a "tekad ummah (community resolve)", beginning with cooperation between Umno and PAS and welcomed participation from other Malay-based parties. The American concern is that images acquired at customs ports could be accessed by Chinese authorities, jeopardising both US and Italian national security. “All data generated by our security equipment belongs to our customers who retain full control over it,” the Nuctech representative said in an emailed statement. Italian officials told the US that it wasn’t possible to cancel the tenders because it would create legal risk as well as possible diplomatic problems with Beijing, according to the people. KUALA LUMPUR: Eight locals, including an Immigration Department officer, have been arrested in an operation to dismantle a syndicate involved in illegally obtaining Malaysian passports. Those arrested included an Immigration officer suspected of facilitating the syndicate’s activities, a Malaysian believed to be a syndicate member, as well as four men and two women aged between 32 and 61. “During the raids, several items were seized, including four birth certificates, one Malaysian passport, eight mobile phones and 13 copies of Malaysian passport application forms,” Zakaria said in a statement on Thursday. Zakaria said the syndicate, believed to have been active since January last year, allegedly received between RM5,000 and RM7,000 for each passport successfully obtained. “All those arrested are being investigated under the Passport Act 1966 and have been taken to Immigration offices for further action.
