His disappearance has been a bone of contention between Lebanon, Libya, and Iran ever since. Despite the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, the case remains unsolved, with Lebanon and Iran urging Libya to probe into Sadr’s case. Hannibal has been detained in Lebanon since 2015 on charges of withholding information about Sadr’s case. Lebanese judicial officials have consistently maintained that Hannibal Gaddafi will not be released until Tripoli provides information about Sadr’s disappearance. Meanwhile, in 2016, Sadr’s family filed a lawsuit against Hannibal Gaddafi for his alleged involvement in the disappearance, adding another layer to the complex narrative.

Once Russia had pushed through enough, created the requisite buffer zone, it was willing for talks to end the conflict. The West jumped in to support Ukraine, with a strategy to draw Russia into a second Afghanistan. As the US was compelled to do in Afghanistan and Iraq, Israel will have to continue to maintain its forces to administer Gaza. The damage caused to stable nations, Iraq and Libya, by ill-planned western intervention, has been immense. Thus, while the US could pull back from Afghanistan, Libya and Iraq, Russia and Israel will be compelled to remain in situ, despite their objectives being partially met.

“Spending eight years in pre-trial detention makes a mockery of Lebanon’s already strained judicial system,” the group’s Hanan Salah said in a statement. Beirut blamed the disappearances on long-time Libyan strongman Moamer Gaddafi – overthrown and killed in 2011 uprising – and ties between the two countries have been strained ever since. In June, a judicial official had told AFP that the case of Hannibal Gaddafi had been halted as they awaited information from Libyan authorities. In August, Beirut received a letter from Libyan authorities demanding Gaddafi’s release, but a judicial source told AFP that he would not be freed before Tripoli revealed information about Sadr’s disappearance. The Libya Energy and Economy Summit 2024 being held at the Rixos Hotel in the capital Tripoli concluded this week. However, Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Al-Dabaiba’s government had to halt this due to objections from legislative and oversight bodies in Libya as well as the Ministry of Oil and Gas. Absence of Senior FiguresIn addition to the absence of key energy summit partners – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné, and Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi – Central Bank Governor Sadiq Al-Kabir and Audit Bureau President Khaled Shakshak were also not present at the summit. The National Oil Corporation appeared to be in the position of spectator regarding this division. The Libya Energy and Economy Summit brought together government officials, industry executives and experts for two days of talks on jumpstarting the country’s stalled energy sector. Officials outlined plans to launch new licensing rounds for oil and gas exploration rights by the end of 2024 – the first such offering to international firms since 2007. Just last week, the country’s largest oil field at Sharara was shuttered by protests, costing 300,000 barrels per day. Bringing more stability to the oil and gas industry will be crucial for Libya’s economic dreams overall. Officials called for finding a mechanism to free up some of those assets specifically for reinvestment into the oil industry.
