India on Monday (local time) raised concern over the resurgence of terrorist activity in Libya at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). “It is imperative that each one outstanding political issues are resolved peacefully by the parties concerned, keeping in mind the larger interests of the Libyan people,” said the Indian envoy. Highlighting the importance of holding Presidential and Parliamentary polls at the earliest, he said, “We hope all parties work together to take care of peace & stability in Libya. Libya has been suffering escalating violence and unrest ever since the autumn of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011. Libya did not hold general elections in December 2021 as previously scheduled, thanks to disagreements over election laws among the Libyan parties.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Najla Al-Manqoush, confirmed on Wednesday the government's continuous work to hold parliamentary and presidential elections according to an agreed constitutional basis to achieve the demands of the Libyan people in imposing security and stability inside the country. This came during her meeting with Canadian Ambassador to Libya, Isabelle Savard, during which they discussed ways to enhance relations and strategic cooperation between the two countries, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs media office. Brent crude rose 91 cents, or 0.9%, to $105.31 a barrel at 0811 GMT. Since then, concerns of economic slowdown and rising interest rates have weighed, despite supply outages in Libya and Nigeria and cuts in Russian gas flows to Europe.

Osama Al-Juwaili, a military officer based in Tripoli, met on Wednesday with several armed groups loyal to outgoing prime minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, a source told The Libya Update. Al-Juwaili, who backs Bashagha, told the armed groups that Dbeibeh must leave office peacefully to “spare Tripoli the war and loss”, according to the source, who requested anonymity for safety concerns. The source noted that most armed groups “did not appear to be strongly attached to Dbeibeh”. The meeting reportedly ended without a final agreement, which led Al-Juwaili to request another meeting with other armed forces from Tripoli and Misurata to “come up with a unanimous opinion against the government of Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh”. The source noted that two of the biggest armed groups in Tripoli, the Deterrence Force (Radaa) and the 444th Brigade, did not attend the meeting as they distant themselves from Dbeibeh and claimed to be “neutral”.

A meeting of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission, originally scheduled for today, was indefinitely postponed, Italian news agency Nova reports. Citing an unnamed source, Nova stated that the reasons for the postponement are not known, nor has a new date for the meeting been set. The Libyan military leaders of the eastern and western regions were due to meet at the end of this week in the city of Benghazi to complete the ongoing consultations, aimed at unifying the Libyan military institution and distributing the tasks carried out by the army.

Mr Farinloye said that the stranded Nigerians were received at the Cargo Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at about 11:58 p.m. He said that the returnees were brought back to the country by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) through a voluntary repatriation programme. He said that the returnees were received by NEMA, along with other sister agencies such as: Immigration Service, Refugee Commission, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Police. Europe and Libya share the Mediterranean Sea: Alexander the Great, the Greeks, Romans and even the Normans have all exchanged goods, culture and ideas with Libya. This is just one of many reasons why the international community needs to stop overlooking the chaos in Libya and help it become a functioning state again. However, Libya needs the support of the international community – and I’m not talking about financial support. This must change too — Libya needs to be disarmed.
