Two military ships of the Russian Federation, escorted by two submarines, made an official stop at the Tobruk naval base in Cyrenaica, the eastern region of Libya, in recent hours. Rumors have been circulating for some time about Russia's intention to open a naval base in the Cyrenaica city. “Aganin also said that the West wrongly accuses Moscow of military expansion in eastern Libya only to justify its own military presence in Libya and other countries. If the Russian military continues to regularly conduct naval activities via Tobruk, over time it will eventually be reduced to a Russian naval base. Editorial: Boost for India’s imageG7’s commitment to promote India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor is a major diplomatic victoryBy Telangana Today Published Date - 17 June 2024, 11:49 PMPrime Minister Narendra Modi in a group picture with G7 leaders and other participants during the outreach session of 50th G7 Summit, in Apulia on Friday. The biggest takeaway from the just-concluded G7 summit in Italy has been the endorsement of India’s growing stature and influence in global affairs. Though the IMEC’s progress has been hindered by the ongoing turbulence in West Asia, the endorsement at the G7 summit would undoubtedly serve as a big booster. The key among them is that it breaks Pakistan’s veto over India’s overland connectivity to the West. But Islamabad was adamant in its refusal to let India gain access to land-locked Afghanistan and Central Asia.

The transfer of U.S. Marine Corps troops stationed in Japan's Okinawa to Guam will start in December, a Marines official said Sunday, the latest development in a long-agreed Japan-U.S. forces realignment plan aimed at reducing the southern island prefecture's base-hosting burden. The cost of the Guam transfer is estimated at $8.7 billion, of which up to $2.8 billion will be shouldered by the Japanese government. But Japan and the United States agreed in 2012 to "delink" the Futenma relocation plan with the Guam transfer plan amid a lack of tangible progress on the Futenma project, with locals calling for moving the base out of Okinawa. The following year the two countries said that the transfer to Guam will begin in the first half of the 2020s. In January 2023, defense and foreign chiefs of Japan and the United States agreed in Washington on "accelerating" work on U.S. force realignment efforts, affirming a plan to start the relocation of Marines from Okinawa to Guam in 2024.

The military strongman in the east of divided Libya, Khalifa Haftar, has named one of his sons as army chief, tightening his family’s grip on the oil-rich region. Lacher said that in recent years Haftar’s sons had enjoyed “a rapid rise” through the military ranks, “achieving in no time what would take other officers decades”. Lacher said that Saddam Haftar now holds real military power and a key role in murky business dealings in a graft-ridden country notorious for trafficking of irregular migrants. The recent reshuffles are “a clear sign of preparation for the day when Haftar disappears and when his entire power structure is then in danger,” Lacher added. The latest example was the death in April of activist Siraj Dughman while in detention at a military base controlled by Haftar.

Head of Libya’s Government of National Unity Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah warned that the country is facing the threat of division and coming up against a “great danger.”During the opening of a mosque in al-Asbiah city on Friday, he said: “Some parties want to divide the country for the sake of a few crumbs, funds and fortunes.”“We declare that the country will remain one and united even if it means dying for it,” he added. Addressing Libya’s enemies, whom he didn’t identify, he stated: “They want to take us back, but I say to them that we will never return to the dark days when we used to fight each other.”“Those who let us live in darkness in the past ten years want to continue to do so,” he remarked. Turning to the economy, Dbeibah said the situation was “good” and that Libya was producing a surplus of oil. Furthermore, he held the central bank responsible for the liquidity crisis, calling on it to “radically” change its policies at banks, which are in turn exploiting the situation in the country. Dbeibah said he has no authority over them.
