BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - Libyan authorities have recovered a large bronze wolf statue that once sat atop a pillar in central Benghazi before disappearing decades ago, found on a farm whose owner said he bought the sculpture as scrap. Bourabida, 80, kept the statue, a replica of the famous Capitoline Wolf sculpture that depicts a legendary scene of ancient Rome, in plain view under a spreading tree next to the terrace of his house. Italian colonial authorities erected the statue in the new Benghazi city centre they were building in the 1930s, promoting a connection between ancient Roman settlement of Libya and their modern colonial rule over the country. However, many priceless Libyan antiquities have disappeared: pillaged by Europeans in colonial times, appropriated after independence or looted in the chaos that has followed a 2011 NATO-backed uprising. Khaled al-Hadar, a Libyan researcher on stolen antiquities, said heritage monitoring remained weak in Libya and had not been started until 1974 - after the wolf had disappeared.

EventThe security situation will likely remain unstable nationwide through at least late August, primarily due to intermittent fighting and armed clashes between various rival militia groups across the country. Competing governmental institutions, as well as geopolitical rivalries, have profoundly complicated the security situation in Libya. Armed groups often disrupt planned power outages by attacking power distribution stations and forcing staff to change the scheduled power loading cycle between districts. If possible, limit exposure to official buildings that may be targeted by armed groups, such as security checkpoints and local government offices. Do not attempt to bypass security checkpoints; even an accidental breach of the security cordon near a checkpoint may prompt security forces to respond aggressively.

Yet, a strange tolerance for this troublesome dynamic prevails, especially from an international community that continuously assesses the status quo as eminently favorable to Libya’s past convulsions. Of particular note is a deeply concerning erosion of civil liberties, which paints a grim picture for Libya’s already troubled transition to a semblance of a democratic state. Forces loyal to both sides of Libya’s political divide continue to target outspoken civilians, journalists and activists, reflecting an unwelcome descent into illiberalism. Besides, a democratic state, as envisioned by Libyans themselves and the global community, is hardly viable within this current context. Finally, inclusive political processes remain crucial to Libya’s democratic evolution.

A migrant rights group reported that security authorities in eastern Libya conducted an overnight raid, resulting in the liberation of at least 385 Pakistani migrants who were being held captive in trafficking warehouses. Photographs shared on Al-Abreen’s official Facebook page displayed numerous Pakistani migrants, presumably those who had been freed, gathered outside one of the warehouses. In June, a tragic incident occurred when a vessel carrying an estimated 700 migrants, including about 350 Pakistanis, sank off the Greek coast.

How serious an impact will reduced rice supplies have on the Arab world following India’s export ban? (Also) the increase in rice prices will be for a short term. I think India has taken the right decision.”For now, anecdotal evidence suggests few consumers in Arab countries are concerned about the impact of India’s export ban. The UAE imports almost 90 percent of its food, making it especially vulnerable to fluctuations in global prices. Other countries that are likely to feel the squeeze of India’s export ban are African importers such as Benin.

Cairo, Aug 1 (AP) Security authorities in eastern Libya freed at least 385 Pakistani migrants who were held in trafficking warehouses in an overnight raid, a migrant rights group said Monday. Al-Abreen, a group which helps migrants in Libya, said the Pakistani nationals were released early Monday from smugglers' warehouses in the al-Khueir area, roughly 5 miles (8 kilometers) south of the eastern Libyan city of Tobruk. Several pictures posted on al-Abreen's Facebook page showed dozens of purportedly freed Pakistani migrants sitting outside of a warehouse.
