The National Assembly has voted to approve President William Ruto’s contested Finance Bill, 2024 in the Second Reading, amid countrywide protests against taxation measures in the proposed law. The Bill sailed through on Thursday evening in a roll-call vote that was undertaken after some members disputed the outcome of the vote that had been done by acclamation. Mr Wetang’ula granted the request but instead of the division, he allowed members to vote by roll call. According to results announced by Mr Wetang'ula after the roll call, the House voted 204 against 115 to send the bill to the Committee Stage. Committee Stage, on the other hand, is the stage in which a detailed examination of a bill, usually clause by clause, takes place.

Budget and Appropriations committee chairperson Ndindi Nyoro, however, indicated that whatever happens to the Finance Bill, the government is prepared. He warned MPs on the effects of budget cuts as Teachers Service Commission (TSC) was set to hire 46,000 tutors as permanent and pensionable in the next budget. “Coffee cherry fund will be cut by Sh1 billion if there is no funding through the Finance Bill. For a second day running, hundreds of Mombasa residents took to the streets to demonstrate against the high cost of living and the Finance Bill 2024. On Wednesday, the residents engaged the police in running battles along the streets of Mombasa, but on Thursday, the demonstrations were rather peaceful. A handful of anti-riot police officers followed the protestors from a distance as they demonstrated along the streets while chanting anti-government songs. The protestors were joined by rights activists from Muslim for Human Rights (Muhuri). The High Court on Thursday, June 20, dismissed a petition that had challenged the Ministry of Education's decision to transition from 8-4-4 to the 2-6-3-3-3 Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) education system. The case was filed by former Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi in 2021 and was determined by a 3-judge bench. "CBC Petition dismissed: no evidence to support any of the grounds relied upon and a lot of money has gone into implementation," Nelson Havi spoke moments after the ruling. According to the High Court judges, granting Havi's prayers would cause havoc to the education system considering the scope of investment. The CBC curriculum was implemented in 2019 by the late Cabinet Secretary for Education George Magoha despite opposition from key education stakeholders.

Worldcoin to resume Kenya operations after police drop investigationKenyan police have dropped an investigation into allegations that Worldcoin had illegally collected and transferred users’ personal data, according to a police document, paving the way for the cryptocurrency project to resume its operations. Authorities suspended Worldcoin in August last year, following privacy objections over its scanning of users’ irises in exchange for a digital ID to create a new “identity and financial network”. Worldcoin is being rolled out by Tools for Humanity, a company co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Worldcoin will resume registration of users across Kenya soon, said Thomas Scott, chief legal officer at Tools for Humanity, in a statement. “We are grateful for the DCI’s fair investigation and for the Director of Public Prosecutions’ determination to close the matter,” Scott said.

The incident occurred around 12:40 pm on Thursday, June 20, as the journalist covered the protests outside Nation Center along Kimathi Street in Nairobi.
