The price of a recently restored Art Deco cinema in East Cork has dropped by more than €300,000 in just two years. The Regal Cinema in Youghal, which was first listed for sale at an asking price of €600,000 in 2024, was re-listed this week at €295,000, marking a significant drop from its original asking price. “Being honest, I think the asking price of €295,000 is a more realistic price,” said Mr Flanagan. “Youghal was the birthplace of moving pictures in Ireland, I know there is interest in the property, so I’m confident that the Regal Cinema will reopen in the long term. “Obviously this is a huge loss to the town, and for us at the Youghal Business Alliance — it was an events centre as much as a cinema.”

The board of management of Wilson's Hospital School wants to be joined as a notice party in jailed teacher Enoch Burke's latest High Court action over the membership of a panel which will hear his appeal against dismissal from the school. Mr Burke has been jailed for contempt of court for a number of periods totalling almost 600 days because he has repeatedly trespassed on school property in breach of court orders. The school board says it will be impacted by the outcome of his latest proceedings seeking to challenge the composition of the appeals panel. Mr Burke claimed Mr Christie was an "activist for transgenderism". The judge made the matter returnable to Friday when Mr Burke is due before the court again.

The Geordie Shore star, 37 - real name Scott Timlin - was revealed in October to have welcomed a baby boy with a university student from Newcastle two months earlier. He clarified that they had never been together - calling their relationship 'casual' - but insisted that despite the womanizing reputation he built for himself on Geordie Shore, he was 'gentleman'. The Celebrity Big Brother star was subsequently dropped from Geordie Shore once again. But he said the money, crowds of adoring fans and ease of the job kept him coming back, recalling how he and a Geordie Shore co-star once made around £200,000 in a single month by doing PAs every night. 'While the show was on air, I'd be doing club personal appearances every night and I started taking cocaine to cope,' he said.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin warned ministers at yesterday's Cabinet meeting that it was “not on” that a full copy of a new report was leaked in advance of it being discussed by ministers. There was confusion on Wednesday about whether the Government intended to ban or restrict social media for under-16s and what this would entail. While it says that “age restrictions on the use of social media” would be examined, a Government spokesperson said last night that this related to specified content on social media rather than restricting access to social media. This is not made clear in the report, leading some to suggest on Tuesday evening that a social media ban would be discussed at Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting. Tánaiste Simon Harris has repeatedly called for a social media ban for under-16s.

A woman who had been living in Cork while applying for asylum said all she now wanted was to be able to leave the country with her family, after her father and brother were jailed pending deportation. Her father and brother said they were sharing the same bed in a cell with four other men in Cloverhill Prison. "My father and brother cannot be released until the flight. “My father's not sleeping because he's worried about my brother, they're in a jail cell with criminals," Ms Breetzke said. But the family says they have been so traumatised by their time in Ireland, with their father and brother jailed, they just want to leave as soon as possible, regardless of any legal implications to their deportation orders.

That energy, that sense of urgency, the sense of needing to say what simply must be said informs every track. That U2 have suddenly exploded back into life with a vitality and purpose we suspected they might have lost. The “greatest kick ass band in the world” weren’t done yet. So many bands make a great noise but fall short because all too often they have nothing to say. U2 seem to have suddenly woken up to the fact that they have a lot to say and there are few bands who, in full flight, can say it so eloquently and so powerfully.

Kerryman in Prague Diarmuid O'Carroll finds it ironic that new Czech manager Miroslav Koubek has been disrespectful to Ireland given his trademark style. Pavel Nedved has entrusted the 74-year-old stalwart as the wildcard choice to lead the Czechs into the World Cup playoff semi-final on March 16. His description of Ireland as "simple" and "typical Islanders" has raised the heat ahead of the showdown. “Because Czechia have players across top level Bundesliga clubs, Italy, Lyon and the English Premier League, they’ll fancy themselves to be at a slightly higher level than Ireland. “The expectation here is that they’ll win the tie but I feel it will be closer than they think.

While the companies are not named in the Ifac research, it is understood that the three highest corporation tax payers are Apple, Microsoft and Eli Lilly. Corporation tax receipts almost doubled between 2021 and 2024, Ifac said, even when receipts from the Apple tax judgement are excluded. "We estimate that together, these two tech companies paid almost €11bn of corporation tax in Ireland in 2024, equivalent to almost 40% of total corporation tax receipts." In addition, the 15% minimum effective tax rate for large corporations will lead to increased corporation tax from 2026 onward, Ifac said, with previous estimates suggesting that this higher tax rate could yield an additional €5bn in corporation tax receipts. “This research highlights how reliant Ireland’s corporation tax has become on just three companies," said Brian Cronin, Economist at Ifac and author of the corporation tax research.

Stainthorpe bought a hands-free lead, assuming it would solve the problem. Stainthorpe’s take on the hands-free dog leash was initially designed to meet his own needs, not least because the legacy of his accident was an arthritic wrist. This sparked the idea for what has become Madra World, a Dublin-based start-up producing hands-free leads that eliminate wrist strain. The dog lead was invented over 2,000 years ago. “No other hands-free leash has the traffic grips, yet they’re critical for safety in urban environments.

Humanoid robots took to the stage and put on a kung-fu/dancing masterclass during the annual China Media Group’s Spring Festival Gala. Video: CCTVDancing humanoid robots took centre stage on Monday during the annual China Media Group’s Spring Festival Gala, China’s most-watched official television broadcast. Developed by several Chinese robotics firms, the robots performed a range of intricate stunts, including kung fu, comedy sketches and choreographed dance moves alongside human performers. Kyle Chan, an expert in China’s technology development at Brookings Institution, a policy organisation in Washington DC, said Beijing uses these public robot performances to “dazzle domestic and international audiences with China’s technological prowess”. “Unlike AI models or industrial equipment, humanoid robots are highly visible examples of China’s technological leadership that general audiences can see on their phones or televisions,” he said.
