Spending on Valentine's Day dropped notably this year, with a 14% fall despite spikes across several consumer categories. The lender said this reflected shoppers spending less on traditional gifts such as flowers and cards and more on a special night out. Restaurant spending was up 22% compared to Valentine’s Day last year, and hotel stays rose 11%, with a strong appetite for romantic dining and overnight stays. “Our Valentine’s Day data shows that while overall spending was slightly softer, people were still determined to make the day special," said Gerardo Larios Rizo, head of hospitality sector at Bank of Ireland. While some romantics shopped ahead, the spike in jewellery sales on the day itself suggests a rush of last-minute panic-buying this year.”

‌Only Newcastle has a healthy life expectancy of above 60, though the city’s figure has fallen for both men and women over the last decade. The region’s lowest healthy life expectancy for men is seen in South Tyneside at 55.8 years and for women in County Durham, at 55.4 years. ‌Every area of the North East has seen healthy life expectancy worsen over the last decade except for Gateshead, which saw small improvements for both men and women, and Sunderland, where the situation improved for men. Hannah Davies, CEO of the Northern Health Science Alliance, said: “Sadly these deeply concerning figures on a decrease in healthy life expectancy are not a surprise. “Improving healthy life expectancy for all should be a non-party political issue but to do that we need to recognise as a society that its roots lie in poverty and deprivation.

Sir, – In his response to Fintan O’Toole on Sinn Féin voting against EU aid to Ukraine, I think it is Prof Geoffrey Roberts who misunderstands the international context of the Spanish Civil War (Letters, February 18th). Like the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Spanish Civil War inevitably had international repercussions. Fortunately, Sinn Féin has no monopoly of either. [ For Sinn Féin, Tiocfaidh ár lá is being replaced by Turn the Other CheekOpens in new window ]Let us deal in facts. Although many parts of the country have experienced flooding for the first time recently, particularly during Storm Chandra last month, one area affected more regularly is Kylemore Bridge on this busy rural thoroughfare. “The flood water will take a car and just sweep it away,” he says. Straight away the water was up around my thighs, I knew we had to get out of the car. This flow drags gravel and silt from the mountains, which then gathers underneath Kylemore Bridge.
