Families have been warned they could be missing out on the Healthy Start scheme. The NHS scheme offers support to families with young children and pregnant women who are on a low income and receiving qualifying benefits. It can be used to buy healthy food such as milk, infant formula, and fruit and vegetables. Despite the benefits, the Healthy Start scheme's current take-up rate is just 63.9%, which is below the government’s target of 75% for March 2023. “Supermarkets must ensure everyone has access to basic, affordable food ranges, especially in areas where they are most needed.”

The Sunday Independent/Ireland Thinks opinion poll has recorded a massive seven point drop to 22pc in voter support for Sinn Féin in the last week of the local and European election campaign. This is a 15 point drop in Sinn Féin’s record high of support in October 2022 when the party commanded 37pc of voter support. Mary Lou McDonald’s party is now neck and neck with Taoiseach Simon Harris’s Fine Gael who are up three points to 22pc in the last month. However, the poll showed the most popular option for voters ahead of next week’s elections is Independent/others who have increased support by four points to 23pc. Despite their dramatic fall in support, Sinn Féin are expected to make gains in council seats as they took less than 10pc of the vote in 2019.

The world’s biggest Irish dancing body has been dealt another blow after its new managing director backed out of the job at the last minute. It is understood that Sarah Bragg-Bolger, the managing director of Dublin Youth Theatre, had accepted the newly created role leading the beleaguered An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha (CLRG) earlier this month. There are also widespread concerns about whether or not CLRG can afford to hold the World Championships in Dublin next year. The new managing director role was a brand new position at CLRG, which was created in the wake of the alleged feis fixing scandal. “The Department is aware of recent reports concerning the accounts filed by CLRG with the Companies Office.

Bryan Sheehan says teams are now training 'athletes, not footballers'Michael BoltonFormer Kerry footballer Bryan Sheehan has backed rumoured changes to scoring in football. Sheehan agreed with this idea, as he says it will encourage teams not to defend as deep, and will lead to players shooting from distance. At the moment, if I am being honest, we are training athletes to play football, rather than footballers to play football. "If you look at inter-county football, how many footballers can kick the ball over the bar from 35, 40 yards. "Teams are now beginning to score goals against Kerry, and the year they won the All-Ireland, teams weren't scoring goals against Kerry.

Donald Trump was convicted of all 34 felony counts in his hush-money trial. For decades, their massively irresponsible foreign policy has caused great unhappiness to millions of people, and not just one or two generations. Two old men are the insulting offerings from the combined war parties as “leader of the free world”. The US political system needs to be quarantined from the rest of the world (7.6 billion of us). Looking back, I often wonder if those days listening to the church bells informing us of the time were happier days all round.

British American Tobacco (BAT) and its peers breathed a sigh of relief when Rishi Sunak decided to call a snap General Election a little more than a week ago. That is because the Government's proposed law to clamp down on smoking by banning those born after 2009 from buying cigarettes failed to make it on to the statute books on time. Investors in the tobacco giant will have to wait to see if BAT sheds any light on this with its update on Tuesday. BAT's American brands have suffered from falling smoking rates, lower sales amid a wider cost-of-living squeeze, and uncertainty around a potential menthol cigarette ban in the US. BAT, which is valued at £53billion, wants to make half of its revenues from non-traditional cigarettes by 2035.

01 Jun 2024| 05:07am ISTHow accurate are Exit polls? In fact, Indians place as much importance on exit polls as they do on actual results. Large sample size is important in exit polls, but more important than sample size is how representative it is if it reflects a variety of voter profiles. Innovative exit polls are likely to be more accurate than estimates made using traditional methods. But exit polls using traditional methods predict vote share and help analyse voting behaviour based on different socio-economic backgrounds.

ESB raises 'serious safety incident' with regulator after skydivers fly through Poolbeg chimneysMuireann DuffyESB has raised a "serious safety incident" with the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) after three skydivers flew through the Poolbeg chimneys in Dublin as part of a PR stunt. Red Bull skydivers Marco Fürst, Marco Waltenspiel and Max Manow jumped from a helicopter over Dublin Bay, at a height of 1,280 metres, early on Friday morning. Having become aware of the skydive, ESB said in a statement: "The Poolbeg chimneys, while no longer in use, are part of an operational site with regular maintenance and works being carried out." "There was potential for a very serious safety incident for the skydivers involved, as well as the workers on the chimney." ESB added that it has raised the issue with the Irish Aviation Authority and the Health and Safety Authority.
