US bases across the Middle East have been struck by Iran as the regime continues to furiously target the region in retaliation for the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. At least 17 bases and military installations used by the US have been damaged by Iran as Donald Trump threatens to hit back with 'death, fire and fury'. Al Udeid Air Base, Al Dhafra Air Base, Ali Al Salem Air Base, Camp Buehring and the Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters have been hit on multiple occasions. And debris can be seen scattered across Al Dhafra Air Base in the UAE and Naval Support Activity Bahrain, home to the United States Fifth Fleet. The intensity and breadth of Iranian strikes has indicated the regime was better prepared for war than the US expected, military officials have claimed.

Scientists have identified an existing drug that could be the long-awaited cure for obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that afflicts 84 million Americans yet has no medication to treat it. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when the upper airway collapses during sleep, causing breathing to repeatedly stop and start. In the short term, this leads to excessive snoring and sleep deprivation that undermines focus, productivity and daily functioning. The study found that the 200mg and 300mg doses of sultiame significantly reduced the frequency of dangerous oxygen drops. Beyond just breathing and oxygen levels, the drug helped people sleep more soundly without being aroused awake by choking for air.

On Sunday night in Los Angeles, when the 98th Academy Awards are presented before a global audience, Ireland will be well represented. Jessie Buckley is the frontrunner for best actress for her memorable performance in Hamnet, while Maggie O’Farrell shares an adapted screenplay nomination for the same film. Irish cinema has reached the point where such a level of representation is no longer remarkable. While this year’s nominations recognise work from Norway, Brazil and elsewhere, three American films dominate the conversation. And yet, Oscar night remains a potent celebration of an artform that, despite its current travails, still has the power to enthrall audiences and transport them to new and previously unimagined worlds.

For this two-day contemplative retreat, the twin peaklets of M and S were rolled out in a few short bursts for the cameras at the flattest summit in the history of political hillocks. “We’re delayed because of Keir Starmer. This may have been the second UKIS Summit, but the photographers had to tell them to shake hands. Keir Starmer legged it, leaving the Irish side to disclose what happened.

But it also means there are fewer smaller second-hand homes suitable for first-time buyers coming on the market. These smaller homes can also be attractive for those wishing to trade down. The BPFI figures show that mortgage drawdowns for people buying second-hand homes are also on the decline, with the mortgage market dominated by first-time buyers. With younger couples choosing to invest and older people seeing limited options to trade down, there is a vicious circle in the second-hand market. The most serious downstream consequence is the ongoing lack of supply for first-time buyers.

The Islamic Republic knows it cannot overcome the military might of the US and Israel and has adopted a strategy of attrition. The regime spent much of the time since the 12-day war in June preparing for such a scenario and has decentralised decision-making structures. Israel continues to be targeted by sophisticated Iranian cluster missiles that send a spray of high explosives on to its cities. For Iran’s theocratic rulers, victory means surviving the war and retaining power, no matter the cost to the country. As the war enters its third week, the policy of attrition seems to be working.
