A provision in the US–Bangladesh reciprocal trade agreement offering zero duty on select textile and apparel exports from Bangladesh to the US, subject to the use of US-produced cotton and fibre inputs, has raised concerns across India’s textile value chain. The pact, signed on February 9, reduces the reciprocal tariff on Bangladeshi goods to 19 per cent from 20 per cent. Industry executives fear the clause could prompt Bangladeshi manufacturers to pivot away from Indian cotton yarn towards US suppliers, hurting Indian exporters of raw material and finished goods. The US is India’s largest export destination, with textile and apparel shipments of $10.5 billion. Bangladesh is the biggest buyer of Indian cotton yarn, accounting for 45–50 per cent of exports.

India’s pledge to import $500 billion worth of US goods in five years would be difficult to execute and could strain the country’s current account deficit, putting renewed pressure on the rupee, trade economists said. “This (import pledge) is surely going to impact India’s trade balance and hence, overall balance of payments,” Biswajit Dhar, trade economist and a former professor in Jawaharlal Nehru University, said. For April-November 2025, the merchandise trade deficit reached $248.32 billion, higher than $223.96 billion in the same period of FY25. Sluggish exportsDhar argued that India’s exports have been sluggish, save for mobile phone production, which has given a fillip to the overall numbers. If the trade deficit goes up, it puts pressure on the current account deficit, which in turn leads to currency depreciation, making imports costlier.

A 42-metre Bailey bridge connecting Dakshindari on VIP Road and Salt Lake’s AA Block is ready to be opened to traffic, an official of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) said. Once operational, the two-way bridge — serving commuters from VIP Road to Salt Lake and vice versa — could significantly reduce travel time for Salt Lake residents heading to the airport. Currently, residents of Salt Lake must reach the Ultadanga crossing before accessing VIP Road en route to the airport. The two-way bridge is 7.5 metres wide and is the second Bailey bridge across the canal separating VIP Road from Salt Lake. The KMDA has installed reflective spring post barriers on the Salt Lake road that vehicles will enter from the bridge.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee visited United Missionary Girls’ High School in Bhowanipore and spoke to the guardians of children writing their Madhyamik exams on Tuesday. When the school’s headmistress came out and greeted the chief minister, Mamata asked herif the school required any help.
