The Malian army was redeployed from Gao to the northern region of Kidal on Monday, according to two security officials who spoke under condition of anonymity. The convoy of 119 vehicles left Gao on Monday morning heading towards the Tuareg rebel stronghold which lies 300km to the northeast of the city. The decision to move was taken on Sunday evening at a meeting of national security chiefs, the officials said. The north of Mali has seen a resurgence of hostilities by predominantly Tuareg rebels against the Malian army since the end of August. The deal came under strain, however, in 2020, following a coup which toppled the civilian government.

Ongoing unrest has forced the suspension of the aerial pest control campaign in Ethiopia’s northern Amhara region, an Ethiopian official said Saturday evening. Agidew Molla, director of Crop Development and Protection at Amhara Region Agriculture Bureau, said that even though destructive crop pest swarms have been detected in the eastern part of the region, pest control measures have been suspended due to uncertain security situation in affected areas. Molla said that even though local farmers are undertaking traditional pest control measures, his bureau has been unable to complement these efforts with aerial campaigns, reported regional administration-owned Amhara Media Corporation. Even though there are sufficient provisions for anti-pest chemicals, the uncertain security situation in the Amhara region has prevented aerial pest campaigns from being done in affected areas, Molla added. The clashes between federal government-aligned security forces and a local militia known as Fano in the Amhara region forced the Ethiopian government to declare a six-month state of emergency in August.

A fire at a police headquarters in north-eastern Egypt has injured at least 38 people, according to the country's health ministry. 12 of the injured were treated on site, while 26 others were taken to hospital, all but two suffering from breathing difficulties. According to the spokesperson, 7 of the injured were treated and discharged. The fire severely damaged the building and took several hours for firefighters to extinguish. In August 2022, a fire at a church in Cairo caused by a short circuit killed 41 worshippers.

Addis Ababa, Oct 2 (UNI) Ethiopian authorities conducted an investigation into Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, former Ethiopian Health Minister and the current head of the World Health Organisation (WHO, over alleged financial wrongdoing and sexual misconduct in 2021, Bloomberg reported on Monday, citing internal documents of Ethiopian law enforcement bodies. The documents include bank information, handwritten witnesses’ statements and online correspondence between investigators, witnesses and banks. The Ethiopian financial intelligence unit also alleged that the ex-health minister harassed women and promoted those who accepted his sexual advances and punished those who did not. Bloomberg reported that these documents contained no proof confirming the accusations. The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives, displaced millions of people, and caused a dire humanitarian crisis in the country.

The new agreement was signed by the Secretary General of ICAO, Juan Carlos Salazar, and the Director General of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA), Mr. Getachew Mengiste. Ethiopia has formalized a new implementation support agreement with ICAO that will provide support to the safe, secure, and sustainable development of the State’s aviation sector by heightening its application of ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs). Undertaken in coordination with the ICAO Eastern and Southern African Regional Office, the signing of the Management Services Agreement (MSA) paves the way for deepened cooperation between ICAO and Ethiopia on critical aviation projects. The agreement encompasses the provision of ICAO’s portfolio of implementation support products and services, including the sharing of expertise, project management, the delivery of training packages and support with procurement, in line with the implementation support services provided by the ICAO Capacity Development and Implementation Bureau.
