Which European artist painted the mysterious 500-year-old image that became a sacred Ethiopian icon? Last month The Art Newspaper published the first colour photographs of the Kwer’ata Re’esu, which was looted at the battle of Maqdala in 1868. As we revealed, it is now owned by a Coimbra collector, who believed it to be by a Portuguese artist. The orders came in the wake of an antisemitic riot that broke out on Oct. 29, 2023, in the neighboring Russian republic of Dagestan. Within Chechnya, Kadyrov uses religion to galvanize supporters and demonstrate his political power. In addition to his near-absolute power within Chechnya, Kadyrov wields unprecedented authority in Russia at large. While other regional leaders are temporary managers, regularly replaced from Moscow, Kadyrov’s power is deeply entrenched.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Tuesday reiterated his pledge not to invade neighbouring nations over the Red Sea but insisted that his government would not abandon its demand for port access. Abiy's remarks last month about the Red Sea raised regional concerns, particularly as tensions emerged with neighbouring Eritrea, which has a long coastline. In a televised speech on October 13, Abiy said that landlocked Ethiopia "is a nation whose existence is tied to the Red Sea", a key waterway for global trade. "With a growing economy and population, lack of access to (the) sea would remain a major problem for us," he said. On Tuesday, Abiy said: "We have no intention of breaching others' sovereignty, but we ask just discussion (about) access to sea".
