Chinese tech giant Tencent said it last year dismissed more than 120 employees for violating its anti-fraud rules, including for corruption and embezzlement. Last year, more than 70 breaches of the code of conduct were reported, Tencent said. Others worked in the group's medical services arm, a sector where Tencent's telemedicine applications have huge market share in China. One of the employees implicated by Tencent was sentenced to four years in prison and fined 100,000 yuan ($14,000), according to the press release. Tencent is now looking for more opportunities abroad, particularly in Europe, where it is strengthening its position by acquiring stakes in major gaming studios.

Former world marathon champion Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia has confirmed his participation in the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon on February 24. Chicago Marathon winner Seifu Tura and former women’s half marathon world record holder, Ababel Yeshaneh, will also be joining their compatriot in RAK. Tola won world marathon gold in Eugene in 2022, but in the interim, he won the Amsterdam Marathon in 2021 and then topped that with victory in the New York City Marathon three months ago. Spokespersons for Ethiopia’s army and government and for the Amhara regional administration did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the reported killings in Merawi. The incident followed clashes between the army and Fano on Monday, said three residents and a Fano fighter who participated in the fighting. After Fano fighters left Merawi, army soldiers began to go from house to house killing civilians, said the three residents, two of whom said they hid in their houses for hours. The residents said they believed the soldiers were punishing them for Fano’s actions but said they had nothing to do with the militia.

Students and scholars alike met in conversation this past weekend to share research, differing opinions and international perspectives in a reflection of the Ethiopian revolution ahead of its 50-year anniversary in February. Speakers ranged from local researchers and professors at UM, to international scholars in African academia. “I crafted this project two years ago when I was at James Madison University, and I was well aware that the Ethiopian Revolution will turn 50 years in 2024.
