First a three-day strike at the beginning of January, now an unprecedented six-day strike: German train drivers' actions will hit companies, ports and consumers alike. Six out of 11 corridors for freight transport in Europe run through Germany, according to the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport. "In addition, the rail strike is putting a strain on people's nerves and tarnishing Germany's already tarnished image as a business location." Frank Huster, managing director of the German Freight Forwarding and Logistics Association, said the strikes could lead to logistics companies losing confidence in rail freight transport. Other freight service providers could benefit Although Deutsche Bahn is the largest provider of rail freight transport (with a market share of over 40%), there are also many private providers covering the remaining freight transport volume.

In a 13-minute press conference, Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud lamented what he termed as 'harassment' and 'intimidation' by the Ethiopian government, sending a stern warning about future relations between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa. According to Hassan Sheikh, his entourage was denied access out of the Hotel room in Addis Ababa, forcing him to seek assistance from Djibouti President Omar Guelleh. Ethiopia-Somalia tensions boil over at African UnionAFP, ADDIS ABABATensions between Horn of Africa rivals Ethiopia and Somalia on Saturday boiled over on the opening day of an African Union (AU) summit in Addis Ababa. The two neighbors — already at odds over a controversial maritime pact — locked horns over Somalia’s claims that Ethiopian security tried to block Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud from accessing the summit venue. The 55-nation AU, which is headquartered in Addis Ababa, has long been criticized for being ineffectual and taking little decisive action in the face of numerous conflicts and power grabs. Mohamud told reporters he had been blocked by Ethiopian security agents as he tried to enter a summit venue, a second time while accompanying Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh. Mogadishu has accused Addis Ababa of violating its sovereignty over a January maritime deal with Somaliland, which declared independence in 1991 in a move not recognized by the international community.

Ethiopia has been gradually developing its renewable energy potential in recent years, adding wind, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric capacity. In the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia is home to abundant renewable energy sources, with the potential for massive green energy generation if supported by greater investment in the sector. Ethiopia has the potential to generate more than 60,000 MW of electric power from hydroelectric, wind, solar, and geothermal sources. Despite this strong potential, Ethiopia has struggled to tap into its natural energy sources due to a lack of investment. “While we are halfway to implementing the 2030 Silencing the Guns in Africa strategy, the continued emergence of areas of tension raises pressing questions. The Minister noted that despite the various challenges linked “to our institutional capacity, the PSC remains actively involved in all issues relating to peace and security on the Continent”. Referring to the AU’s PSC report, Bourita said that over the course of 2023, the PSC had demonstrated positive dynamism, holding a total of 61 meetings and producing 58 significant conclusions. The current situation in Africa gives cause for legitimate concern, characterized by persistent security challenges, often of an asymmetrical nature, noted the Minister, adding that no region in Africa today is spared from sources of instability. This undertaking also requires better coordination and synergies between the AU, the UN Security Council and Africa’s partners, on the one hand, and between the AU and the Regional Economic Communities, on the other, the Minister stressed.
