Reading Time: 2 minutesSouth Africa’s Vodacom Group on Monday reported a 10.8% fall in full-year earnings, impacted by start-up loss in Ethiopia, higher finance and energy costs and inflationary pressure. The company, majority-owned by Britain’s Vodafone, co-launched Safaricom Ethiopia in 2022 as part of a consortium, betting that the populous nation will power growth after about five years of investment. Vodacom has a direct 5.7% stake. Group CEO Shameel Joosub said weaker exchange rates across markets including the recent devaluation of the Egyptian pound contributed to the decline in HEPS. He said despite start-up costs associated with operations in Ethiopia, Safaricom has confirmed that its network roll-out was on track in Africa’s second-most populous country after Nigeria.

ReutersMuch of the work has been completed by the armed forces, under whom the Future of Egypt Authority is managed.

Professor of Geology and Water Resources at the Cairo University Abbas Sharaky announced Saturday that Lake Victoria achieved the highest water level this year in its history. During a phone interview with “al-Hadath al-Youm” satellite channel, Sharaky said that the lake exceeded its highest level by about five cm, noting that “The rain regime in the sources of the Nile River is in a great miracle … all months of the year have rain.”“God wanted Egypt’s share to remain in his protection and care,” he remarked. Sharaky noted that the level of rain will be high in Ethiopia during July, which will reflect on Egypt’s water revenues and reduce the amount of storage damage in the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). The High Dam guarantees protection for Egypt from Ethiopia’s releases of excess water, he noted, assuring that Egypt has all the water it needs during Ethiopia’s storage period. An increase in Lake Victoria by one cm means an increase of one billion cubic meters of water, the professor said, adding that the lake has increased by about 50 cm within the past period.
