In a statement issued today, MFA Ethiopia stated, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is deeply saddened to learn about the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of the Vice President of the Republic of Malawi, Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and other nine Malawians.”In a heartfelt gesture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed its deepest condolences to the bereaved families, friends, the Government, and the people of the Republic of Malawi. “The Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and its people stands in solidarity with the Government and people of the Republic of Malawi during this difficult time,” the statement read. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia offers prayers for the peaceful repose of the souls of the departed.”

Of the total budget, 283 billion birr has been allocated for capital expenditure, 451.3 billion birr for recurrent spending, 222.7 billion birr to subsidize regional states, and 14 billion birr for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal projects. Riyadh doctors working remotely save Jordan pilgrim from stroke in MadinahRIYADH: Doctors working remotely from Riyadh helped a 72-year-old Jordanian pilgrim in Madinah survive a stroke this week, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday. The medical team specializing in telestroke medicine is affiliated with the Seha Virtual Hospital in Riyadh, the SPA reported. The pilgrim, who has a history of chronic illness, was treated at the Madinah General Hospital. In a joint effort, doctors from the Ministry of Health, the Seha Virtual Hospital, and the Madinah General Hospital located a brain clot and performed a cerebral catheterization procedure. A total of 5,466 volunteers, in over 16 locations in Madinah and Makkah, are helping with first aid and emergency care for Hajj pilgrims this year.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) today launched the USAID Urban TB Local Organizations Network II Activity, a five year $8 million (450 million Birr) flagship project to control and prevent Tuberculosis (TB) and Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (DR-TB) in selected urban regions of Ethiopia. The project will be implemented in Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Shaggar City in the Oromia region, and Harari National Regional State. “2024 marks an important milestone in the relationship between the people of the United States and the people of Ethiopia. The two countries established formal diplomatic ties 120 years ago, and 60 years later, USAID was established in Ethiopia. The United States Government is a longstanding partner in supporting the healthcare and wellbeing of the people of Ethiopia.

More than 40 people have died in a fire that swept through a residential building housing workers in Kuwait’s southern Mangaf district. Dozens of residents of the building were injured in the blaze which broke out early on Wednesday morning. It is being reported that many of the people living in the building were foreign workers, without giving their nationality. Kuwait, like other Persian Gulf countries, has a large community of migrant workers who far outnumber the local population. Manorama News, a TV channel based in the Indian state of Kerala, reported that 10 of the dead were Indian nationals from Kerala.

Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia announced on Monday that it has launched commercial operations in the war-torn Tigray region, and is in the process of building a 4G network that will be upgradeable to 5G. In a statement, Safaricom said the expansion into Tigray is being executed in two phases. The first phase – which has just been completed – involved construction of 125 towers constructed by Safaricom. Safaricom also said it has established a regional office in Tigray employing a dozen people, with more recruitment underway. Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported in August 2023 that the Ethiopian government estimates reconstruction in Tigray will cost around US$20 billion.
