June 10, 2024 —Lucy Fowler is working at the intersection of Indigenous and queer identity to make the university experience and broader community more inclusive. “We need to be making more expansive spaces … where people can express who they are, however they are, and come to that space and be welcomed,” Fowler said of her work at the university. Fowler is helping to develop a U of M Indigenous education post-doctoral program, co-founded the Pawaatamihk: Journal of Métis Thinkers academic journal, and is co-hosting a Métis studies symposium this fall with over 300 scholars expected to attend. Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem acknowledges the need to rebuild trust with Canadian households after two years of interest rate hikes and messaging missteps, as reported by CBC News. This week, the central bank cut rates for the first time since March 2022, after one of the most aggressive hiking cycles in Canadian history, raising its key overnight lending rate 10 times to control inflation. Canadian households faced rising prices and increased borrowing costs, exacerbated by Macklem's earlier assurance that interest rates would remain low.
Thousands of members of Toronto's Jewish community marched down a major city artery on Sunday as part of an annual pro-Israel event that unfolded amid heightened security and protests along the route. The United Jewish Appeal held its annual "Walk with Israel," which involves a five-kilometre walk and a festival in the city's north end. Marchers encountered two groups of protesters within the first hour of the walk, with police using buses to obstruct demonstrators' view of the event. A historic church in Toronto's west end has been "completely destroyed," along with the artifacts it housed, says the city's fire chief, as firefighters remained on scene overnight Sunday to monitor the situation.
