Days after Red Lobster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and announced that it would close dozens of its seafood restaurants, the chain's Canadian counterpart will ask a provincial court to enforce the U.S. bankruptcy in Canada, CBC News has learned. Red Lobster Canada, Inc., a Delaware-incorporated company that owns and operates Red Lobster restaurants across Canada, was part of the Chapter 11 filing in the U.S. There is currently a stay in proceedings in place in Canada preventing any creditor from taking action in Canada against [Red Lobster] Canada and certain affiliated entities, Rogers wrote. Court filings showed that Red Lobster was investigating the role that seafood supplier Thai Union, which held a minority stake in the company, played in the promotion that caused $11 million US in losses. A spokesperson for Thai Union told CBC News last month that it had exited its investment in Red Lobster and would not comment further.

TORONTO — CBC is launching 14 free ad-supported streaming channels dedicated to local news across Canada in an effort to attract younger audiences who don't have the "traditional habits" of linear news consumers. On Thursday, the public broadcaster debuted CBC News BC and CBC News Toronto on platforms including CBC Gem and the CBC News App, with additional platforms expected to join in the coming weeks. Within a year, CBC said 12 more so-called FAST channels will serve audiences in the North and every province, including dedicated channels in Calgary, Edmonton, Windsor, Ont. CBC detailed the plan while announcing its upcoming fall/winter lineup, noting the channels will cover major breaking news, weather and local stories. The channels follow CBC’s recent launch of seven community-focused podcasts across the country and 19 local live streams on CBC Radio in the CBC News App.

serial killer Robert Pickton is in a medically induced coma and on life support, four days after he was attacked by another inmate in prison. The killer is still in critical condition, Sûreté du Québec (SQ) spokesperson Hughes Beaulieu confirmed with CBC News on Thursday morning. Canada's Public Safety Minister Dominic Leblanc also confirmed a probe into the circumstances of the attack earlier this week. The sister of one of Pickton's victims told CBC News that she felt relieved and happy when she heard that the serial killer had been attacked in prison.
