REUTERS/Violeta Santos MouraFamilies of Israeli hostages taken captive to Gaza by Islamist group Hamas fear their loved ones are in greater danger after Israeli troops killed the militant group's leader, Yahya Sinwar. That leaves 101 hostages still in Gaza by Israeli tallies, at least half of whom Israeli authorities believe are still alive. "Sinwar, who was described as a major obstacle to a deal, is no longer alive," they said in a statement. But Sinwar had eluded detection, possibly hiding in the warren of tunnels Hamas has built under Gaza during the past two decades. I'm not sure what does it mean about our hostages and their safety and how many of them are still alive?

Real Madrid have, for the moment at least, given their support to star forward Kylian Mbappe since the Swedish media reported that he is being investigated for an alleged rape during a visit to Stockholm. On Tuesday, Real were accused of deleting 25-year-old Mbappe from photos it published in a promotional campaign with its jersey manufacturer Adidas. Reports in several Swedish media say they visited a restaurant and a nightclub. A Swedish prosecutor has only confirmed that an investigation has been opened, without naming Mbappe. His lawyer Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard told AFP on Tuesday the 2018 World Cup winner was "at ease" because "he has done nothing wrong".

“I’m incredibly proud of all the patients who participated in the trial; their contribution has allowed us to gather the evidence needed to improve treatment of cervical cancer patients everywhere.”The new treatment approach also cuts the risk of cervical cancer returning or relapsing by 35%, the researchers added. All had locally advanced cervical cancer, though none had tumors that had spread to other organs. “Timing is everything when you’re treating cancer,” Dr. Iain Foulkes, executive director of research and innovation at Cancer Research UK, said in the group's news release. Cisplatin-based chemotherapy is currently the most commonly used method of treating cervical cancer, improving survival rates by 30% to 50%. “Of the 4,400 deaths from cervical cancer, none of them get screened every year.”More informationThe National Cancer Institute has more on cervical cancer.

In a year when costs have increased and tax revenue has fallen across the County, legislators have been busy debating and revising the 2025 Tompkins County Budget, which is expected to pass in November. While costs are rising, sales tax revenue — the second largest source of revenue — is projected to drop significantly for Tompkins County. Legislator Shawna Black (11th District) explained that the decline in sales tax is one of the County’s biggest concerns. Property taxes are the largest source of revenue for Tompkins County, and in 2025, the property tax percentage will decrease for homeowners. This year, home valuations increased by 20.5 percent in Tompkins County over the past year, far outpacing New York state’s overall increase of 6.8 percent.

REUTERS/Tatiana MeelBritain said on Thursday it had imposed sanctions on 18 more Russian oil tankers and four liquefied natural gas vessels, the largest batch of sanctions to date against Russia's so-called "shadow fleet". Britain says the 'shadow fleet' uses illicit practices to avoid Western restrictions on Russian oil. The government said it was working with maritime authorities to demand that Russian vessels with suspected dubious insurance provide details of their insurance status as they pass through the English Channel. The 18 oil tankers will be barred from UK ports and unable to access British maritime services, bringing the total number of sanctioned Russian oil tankers to 43. The targeted oil tankers transported an estimated 4.9 billion pounds ($6.37 billion) worth of oil last year, it said.

New Delhi, Oct 17 (VOICE) Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan said that he would likely miss the South Africa Test series which was supposed to be his final international appearance due to serious concerns over his safety. Shakib, who also served as a lawmaker in the ousted government of Sheikh Hasina, cited a “security issue” as the reason behind his decision to avoid returning to Bangladesh. Shakib, 37, was scheduled to board a Dhaka-bound flight from Dubai at 5:00 pm Bangladesh time, but was reportedly asked by higher authorities to await further communication before boarding. It is over a security issue, a matter of my own security.” He had been in Dubai but is now expected to travel to the United States rather than returning to Bangladesh. DAMASCUS, Oct 17, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Syrian state media said Thursday an Israeli air strike sparked fires in the coastal city of Latakia. "Anti-aircraft defence intercepted hostile targets above Latakia," SANA said. The news agency reported "fires were triggered by the Israeli aggression" at the entrance to Latakia, a stronghold of President Bashar al-Assad. The Israeli military, which has launched hundreds of strikes in Syria in recent years, said it would not comment on the Latakia bombardment when contacted by AFP. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, said the Israeli strike "targeted a weapons depot in Latakia city".

WONJU, South Korea, Oct 17, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - K-pop megastar J-hope from BTS ended eighteen months of South Korean military service Thursday, with his bandmate embracing him and dozens of fans turning up to celebrate his return to the industry. J-hope, the main dancer of the group, emerged from the gates of his army base in South Korea's central Wonju city, where he was met by fellow band member Jin, who finished his service in June. Fans had put a life-size cut out of J-hope dancing outside the base, with a giant balloon congratulating him on his military discharge flying overhead. The latest BTS military discharge is likely to be good for the K-pop industry as a whole, analysts said. "Unless all BTS members complete their military service and make a full-group comeback, J-Hope's solo return might not be enough to overshadow the conflict completely," he added.

Skipper Rohit Sharma on Thursday said he was "hurting" after opting to bat first on a seaming pitch as hosts India fell to a dismal 46 all out against New Zealand. It was India's third-lowest Test score ever and lowest at home, worse than their 75 against the West Indies in New Delhi in 1987. Their lowest overall is 36 against Australia in a pink-ball Adelaide Test in 2020. "I am hurting a little bit because I made that call," said Rohit. Henry wrapped up the innings with a five-wicket haul and his last strike of Kuldeep Yadav was his 100th Test wicket.
