Bangladesh’s July 2024 uprising constituted a “decisive rupture” in the country’s contemporary political order, reshaping power relations while opening an uncertain transition marked by reform pressures, elite bargaining, and rising public anxiety, according to a new governance study unveiled on Sunday. Titled “Rupture, Reform, and Reimagining Democracy: Navigating the Agony of Transition,” the session shared key insights from the State of Governance Research Project 2024–2025, which examines Bangladesh’s political trajectory following the July uprising. According to the report, what began as student-led demands for quota reform rapidly escalated into a nationwide political movement that ultimately dismantled the long-entrenched ruling order. Islamist political forces, particularly Jamaat-e-Islami, have transitioned from being “political pawns” within the old order to independent and consequential actors, the study finds. Meanwhile, the Awami League and the Jatiya Party have become “political pariahs” in the new order, while left-wing politics remains further marginalized.

He argued that stabilizing commodity prices is not just an economic necessity but a moral responsibility. Although early signs of competitive politics were visible, TIB noted that political parties and candidates gradually reverted to old political settlements characterised by violence and intolerance. Political actors not only continued using money, religion, muscle power, patriarchy and majoritarian influence, but the intensity of money and religious mobilisation has increased further. Allegations have also emerged of cash distribution by influential political parties to influence voters. Further controversy emerged when, 18 days into the government’s campaign, the Election Commission issued instructions to government officials, raising questions about both legality and prudence. He criticised both the government and the Election Commission for misinterpreting legal boundaries and adopting controversial measures that undermined the credibility of the process.

Testifying as a prosecution witness in a crimes against humanity case against former army officer Major General (retd) Ziaul Ahsan, Iqbal Karim said the DGFI had emerged as the main controlling authority during that period. The case involves allegations against Ziaul Ahsan over his role in more than a hundred incidents of enforced disappearances and killings during the Awami League government’s rule. In his deposition, Iqbal Karim said that detaining civilians in DGFI cells became a routine practice, and over time, a psychological barrier disappeared, leading officers to believe they could do anything to detainees at will. As part of that process, Iqbal Karim appeared as the first witness.

Political leaders, economists, and business groups argue that a deal with wide-ranging trade and fiscal implications should have been left to the incoming government. Tariff negotiations, trade imbalanceCommerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin said Bangladesh is seeking further reductions in additional US tariffs but declined to specify the likely outcome. Economists suggest Bangladesh could seek future adjustments through the existing Trade and Investment Cooperation Framework Agreement (Ticfa) platform with the US.

At the demonstration, speakers alleged that Dr Rahman had repeatedly made derogatory comments about working women, including statements portraying women who participate in public life in a demeaning manner and suggesting that they should remain confined to the home. The organizers said such remarks undermine women’s dignity and their constitutional right to equal participation in society. “The contribution of women is central to the country’s economy and social development,” organisers said, adding that comments dismissing women’s public roles ignore this reality and reflect “deep-seated prejudice”. Speakers at the protest said this position highlights a contradiction between public commitments and political practice, and reinforces structural discrimination against women in politics. The protest concluded with a call for greater vigilance to ensure that women’s rights and participation remain protected in the country’s political process.
