A youth named Siam, 21, was killed in a crude bomb explosion thrown by miscreants from the Mogbazar Flyover onto the road below, police said. The incident occurred in front of the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command in the Mogbazar Mor area. Siam was an employee of Zahid Car Decoration in Mogbazar. He said the explosive appeared to have fallen directly on Siam, causing him to die at the scene. The Election Commission (EC) has extended the registration period for voting in the 13th National Parliament Election and Referendum through the ‘Postal Vote BD’ app until December 31. The decision was announced on Wednesday, according to an EC handout. As of 4:30pm on December 24, a total of 679,186 people had completed their registration via the app. Previously, the deadline for registration through the Postal Vote BD app was set for December 25.

Police have arrested one Himon Rahman Shikdar, an Adabar Thana Jubo League activist and an associate of Alamgir, the motorcyclist allegedly involved in the killing of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson and Dhaka-8 prospective candidate Sharif Osman Hadi. The arrest was made on Wednesday around 2pm during a raid at a residential hotel in the Adabar area, based on secret information received by the Intelligence and Analysis Division (IAD), said Officer-in-charge of Adabar Thana Ziaur Rahman. Following information provided by the arrestee, police recovered a foreign-made pistol, three rounds of live ammunition, fireworks, crackers, gunpowder and various materials used for making cocktails from the house of his associate Mehdi in the Baitul Aman Housing area under Adabar Thana. Police said preliminary interrogation revealed that Himon Rahman Shikdar and his associate were planning subversive activities. Efforts are underway to arrest others involved in the incident.

Hasnat Abdullah, chief coordinator of the NCP’s southern region, said on Wednesday that their demand for political reform in Bangladesh will continue, and they will not step back even if it costs them their lives. He made the remarks at a condolence and solidarity gathering organized by the Democratic Reform Alliance at King Community Centre in Feni, protesting the killing of revolutionary Osman Hadi. Hasnat Abdullah urged voters to support reform and justice in upcoming elections, and oppose authoritarianism. He criticized some political parties for dissolving their organizations for the sake of single constituencies, calling it an injustice to their own party. The Advisory Council on Wednesday gave final, policy-level approval to the Bangladesh Telecommunication (Amendment) Ordinance 2025, aimed at ensuring that internet and telecommunication services in the country cannot be shut down even for a minute under any circumstances. He added that the previous law had been updated and made time-appropriate, explicitly ensuring that internet services in Bangladesh cannot be suspended even for one minute in the future. The updated law also strengthens the regulatory framework, consolidating the authority, effectiveness, and accountability of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). He further said the ordinance establishes a clear legal foundation to protect national security and digital infrastructure. It also aims to create an investment-friendly and competitive environment, aligning Bangladesh’s telecom regulations with international standards, including those of the International Telecommunication Union.

A fifth-grader in Narayanganj’s Bandar Upazila has been abducted and strangled to death after she screamed while resisting an attempted rape, police say. Bandar Police chief Golam Muktar Ashraf said one of the three arrested suspects gave a confessional statement under Section 164 on Wednesday. The arrested men have been identified with the single names Faisal, alias Badsha, 29, Ismail, 40, and Emon, 25. Officer Ashraf said Faisal confessed to the incident, saying the child was abducted from a road outside her home and taken to a room, where the suspects attempted to rape her. “All three arrested men are drug users and were directly involved in the killing,” Ashraf added.
