The interim government has suspended two more police officers for prolonged absence from duty, following similar action against 18 senior officers earlier this week. The home ministry issued the suspension orders on Tuesday and Wednesday against Superintendent Md Nazmul Islam and Hafiz Al Faruq, who was promoted to SP on supernumerary status. Both previously served with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police until the Awami League government was ousted on Aug 5 last year. Under rule 12(1), they are suspended from service from the date of absence. On Sunday, 18 police officers were suspended under the same rules for absence from duty.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has been attacked during a public hearing at her residence, local media reports. Bangladesh’s Election Commission (EC) is set to launch voter registration and national identity card (NID) services for expatriate Bangladeshis in Japan later this month and in Canada in early September. Technical teams have already completed the installation of equipment and training at mission offices in Tokyo, Toronto and Ottawa, according to the commission's NID Registration Wing Director-General ASM Humayun Kabir. The launch comes after delays in Japan, where services had originally been scheduled to begin in July but were postponed due to local complications. At present, NID services are available for expatriates in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Italy, Kuwait, Qatar, Malaysia and Australia. The commission plans to gradually expand NID services to 40 countries.

Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur has said that AFM Shahinul Islam, head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), has been placed on leave after a video of him circulated on social media. The governor said an investigation has been launched, and further action would depend on its findings. The move came a day after a Facebook video showed Shahinul in a private video call with a woman. Shahinul was absent from his Bangladesh Bank office on Tuesday, and he could not be reached for comment despite repeated calls. A former executive director of Bangladesh Bank, Shahinul was appointed chief of the BFIU in January by the finance ministry for a two-year term.

Mobile financial service provider Nagad says it has returned most of the money Evaly customers deposited with it before the e-commerce platform collapsed. In a statement on Tuesday, Nagad said Tk 176.93 million was held on behalf of Evaly customers when the company shut down in October 2021. Of that, Tk 128.31 million has since been refunded to 24,630 customers. According to Nagad, following government verification procedures in 2023, it refunded Tk 61.44 million to 1,631 customers, while in 2024, it disbursed Tk 66.82 million to 22,999 customers in several instalments. It added that Tk 48.62 million remains deposited on behalf of Evaly customers and would be returned once the committee instructs.

Pakistan’s new High Commissioner to Bangladesh Imran Haider has presented his credentials to President Mohammed Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has dismissed the idea of holding elections under a proportional representation (PR) system, saying it is “completely unacceptable” to the party. “This system is not understood by the people of this country, nor do they know how it is applied. Other political parties, including the Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Andolan Bangladesh, have been demanding elections under the PR system. On Sunday, Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher raised the demand to carry out PR-based elections for both houses of the legislature. State-owned Biman Bangladesh Airlines has reported an unaudited profit of Tk 9.37 billion for the 2024-25 fiscal year. The company said the previous second-highest profit in its history came in 2021-22, when it earned Tk 4.4 billion. According to the airline, revenue in the 2024-25 fiscal year amounted to Tk 116.31 billion. In the previous year, Biman said, it surpassed the Tk 100 billion revenue mark for the first time.
