Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ishrat Jenifar Jerin on Tuesday sent the case to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judges’ Court for further trial proceedings. The case alleged the accused participated in a Zoom meeting of the “Joy Bangla Brigade” and allegedly conspired to “overthrow the government”. A total of 261 accused in the case are absconding, including Hasina, who is currently residing in India, said Md Salahuddin, a bench assistant at the court. The chargesheet submitted on July 30, however, accused Hasina and 286 others. During the meeting, Hasina allegedly made anti-state remarks and instructed her followers to overthrow the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) of Dhaka has written to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner requesting him to ensure security in and around the court premises following a broad daylight murder near the court area. CMM Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman sent the letter on Tuesday, according to a press release. Tariq Saif Mamun, once known as a “top criminal”, was shot dead on Monday while returning home after appearing in a case filed 28 years ago. He was shot near the gate of Dhaka National Medical College, adjacent to the court area.

A Bogura court has sentenced three people to death and three others to life in prison over the murder of Tozammel Haque, a candidate for chairman in the Bogura union council elections in 2017. Judge Shajahan Kabir of the Bogura District and Sessions Court delivered the verdict in the eight-year-old case after an extended trial on Tuesday. The death row convicts are Babul Prang aka Abul Kalam Azad, Manik, and Moniruzzaman aka Mishu. He said that on Nov 27, 2017, businessman and Union Parishad (UP) chairman candidate Tozammel had gone to Boithabhanga village to attend his cousin’s wedding. The Election Commission (EC) is set to begin a dialogue with registered political parties ahead of the parliamentary polls. The government has extended the powers of executive magistracy granted to Bangladesh Army for another three and a half months (110 days) for a seventh time ahead of the upcoming general election. The Army was deployed across the country before the fall of the Awami League government. Although the curfew was lifted after the fall of the government on Aug 5, 2024, army personnel Aere left in the field to shore up the deteriorating law and order situation. Under the prevailing law and order situation, the Bangladesh Army was granted the powers of executive magistrates on Sept 17 last year. The finance ministry has approved the implementation of the decision to raise the pay scale of government primary school head teachers from grade 11 to grade 10. According to officials, the Implementation Wing of the ministry’s Finance Division has authorised the salary upgrade for 65,502 head teachers. “The order, issued on Sunday, has been sent to the primary and mass education ministry,” he said. Both supported upgrading the pay scale of head teachers to grade 10. The government expects that the head teachers will now be more motivated to enhance the standard of primary education with the support of other teachers and stakeholders.

An activist of the Mohammadpur unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP, has been found dead in the capital. His colleagues reportedly broke down the door of a house in Chandrima Housing and took him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The deceased Sabbir Hasan was the joint convener of the Mohammadpur Chhatra Dal unit, police said, citing findings in the initial investigation.
