A new report by Afrobarometer, a pan-African research network, found that support for democracy was waning in Africa, following a spate of coups, particularly in West Africa, and violent protests across the continent. The flagship report, dubbed African insights 2024: Democracy at risk – the people’s perspective, examined the continent’s citizens’ satisfaction with democracy and revealed divergences between stable and unstable countries. It showed that support for democracy dropped 7% with two-thirds of Africans still preferring democracy, compared with a decade earlier. The steepest drop in support for democracy was reported in South Africa, where only 43% of the surveyed population considered that “democracy is preferable to any other kind of government.”In Mali, a country ruled by men in uniform, 39% of the participants were supportive of a democratic government. Moroccan, Zimbabweian and Tanzanian citizens were among the six countries in the continent where respondents were satisfied with the way democracy was working.

Cybersecurity specialist Exclusive Networks Africa has announced a new local partnership with Akamai Technologies, a cloud company that powers and protects life online, with a view to assisting the organisation to further entrench itself across the African continent. According to Stefan van de Giessen, Security and GSI Lead Africa at Exclusive Networks Africa, the two businesses have already worked together on a significant local project, which saw the successful implementation recently of a microsegmentation strategy for an African telecommunications group. These traditional methods rely heavily on network-based controls that are coarse and often cumbersome to manage, notes Van de Giessen. However, the software-based segmentation element of microsegmentation separates security controls from the underlying infrastructure and provides businesses with the flexibility to extend protection and visibility anywhere. Van de Giessen said: “Microsegmentation is essentially a software-defined network overlay that, through AI intelligence, allows for greater visibility around all assets within the network.

Libya held on Wednesday a conference on irregular migration that saw the attendance of representatives from 28 European and African countries hoping to establish a "strategic" cooperation to resolve the issue. Libya, about 300 kilometres (186 miles) from Italy, is a key departure point for migrants, primarily from sub-Saharan African countries, risking perilous Mediterranean Sea journeys to seek better lives in Europe. But with mounting efforts by the European Union to curb irregular migration, many have found themselves stranded in Libya and other North African countries. He called for development projects in departure countries. "We can only resolve the migration crisis at the root, in the countries of departure," he said.

Africa’s digital financial ecosystem is still maturing, and as digital payments become more integrated across countries, and regions, and more interoperable across payment platforms, this increasingly complex environment can introduce new cybersecurity vulnerabilities. As digital payments become more prevalent, financial institutions must design products with built-in security features and continuously educate users on safe practices. More than this, there is a growing need to build the cybersecurity capacity needed to sustain the digital payments landscape. Cybersecurity is a cornerstone of Africa’s digital payments landscape. By addressing these challenges, Africa can build a secure digital payments ecosystem that supports economic growth and instills trust among users.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made remarks on migration and the energy crisis as she took part in the Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum in Tripoli, Libya on Wednesday. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean land mines could be swept into South Korea by flooding, South Korea’s military warned Wednesday, after the North has recently placed tens of thousands of additional deadly explosives along the rivals’ heavily fortified border. South Korea officials believe North Korea aims to boost its frontline security posture and prevent its soldiers and citizens from defecting to South Korea. Concerns about possible North Korean provocation have deepened after Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, threatened new countermeasures Tuesday against South Korean civilian activists’ efforts to drop leaflets over the north by balloon. North Korea has earlier responded by flying trash-carrying balloons toward South Korea, which have not caused major damage. In 2014, North Korea fired at balloons flying toward its territory and South Korea returned fire, though there were no casualties.

Part of its mission is to address gender inequality and reduce gender-based violence. At the policy level, there’s a limited understanding of technology-facilitated gender-based violence’s impact and legal status among survivors, perpetrators, authorities, and society. What’s more, digital violence is often trivialised by authorities, leading to low reporting rates and inadequate protection. Statistics show that digital violence is on the rise across the Middle East and North Africa, with nearly half of the women in the region experiencing online violence. Further research is needed to understand the nature and consequences of technology-facilitated gender-based violence for survivors and broader society, Loening says.

Virgin said it would "welcome the opportunity to discuss what is needed", and is "extremely proud of our time serving the passengers of north Wales". Last year Avanti West Coast was ordered to develop a recovery plan, aimed at addressing poor performance on vital routes. Under this type of licence, a firm does not receive any state subsidies and takes on the risk of running a rail service itself. It added that performance on the north Wales route had been impacted by the additional training required to launch the new Evero fleet.
