Ayer’s Repairs at the corner of Chapala and Victoria Street closed after 40 years. Their website is now redirecting to a tire shop that’s not in the area. Is this business going to take over the shop or did they simply buy their site? I’m curious what edhat reader’s experience was with Ayer’s and if they’ll miss the downtown mechanic.

This study focuses on China’s prioritization of domestic soft power through the hosting of sports mega-events; the stance we take is, necessarily, western-centric viewpoint. We do so by drawing on two major sporting events that also contribute to an understanding of China’s broader ‘soft power strategy’. Although the political context had changed between 2008 and 2022, China’s penchant of prioritizing domestic soft power while showcasing ‘external propaganda’ (duìwài xuānchuán) using sport mega-events did not. Concluding remarksIt is evident that sports, and specifically sports mega-events, are central to China’s soft power strategy, its ‘external propaganda’ (duìwài xuānchuán), and its purpose is primarily for regime legitimacy. In this paper we have posited the notion that China’s state-led soft power strategy using sports mega-events is ‘unique’, that is, it does not follow Joseph Nye’s understanding of the concept, but rather the emphasis is much more on domestic soft power.

Donald Trump has said he will sign an immediate executive order imposing a 25% tariff on all products from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10% tariff on China. Trump said the tariffs would remain in place until the US’s two neighbors clamp down on drugs, particularly fentanyl, and people crossing the border illegally. “A tariff is basically a sales tax, raising the price of almost everything you buy,” said Robert Reich, a secretary of labor under Bill Clinton. Canada, Mexico and China account for about 40% of the goods the US imports each year, according to official statistics. I watched this programme on BBC2 last night on ultra-processed foods and the games that companies in that industry play to hide their culpability for the health consequences arising from their products:The programme is here, if you have a BBC licence. The programme was just what the BBC should be doing, and was powerful in its analysis, with which the ultra-processed food industry refused to engage. If you wonder why I get so worried about the economic, social and health consequences of these supposed foods this programme is essential watching, not least for highlighting the links with the tobacco industry and its creation of the false narratives about food, fat and addiction.

County CricketEven before the sale of any interests in any franchise of The Hundred, cricket has opened itself to international investors. In September, Hampshire County Cricket Club ("Hampshire") became the first county cricket club to secure overseas investment, having been acquired (albeit in phases) by GMR Global Pte Ltd ("GGPL"), the co-owners of the Indian Premier League ("IPL") franchise, Delhi Capitals. Expanding media and sponsorship deals: The ECB could increase sponsorship and media rights for county cricket to generate additional revenue streams, reducing reliance on The Hundred funds. The ECB must carefully manage the cash windfall, investing in non-host counties, while allowing host counties to benefit from the rewards.
