“The Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry expects exports in the second half of the year to expand even further as more countries lift restrictions,” Minister Chalermchai Sreeon said on Wednesday. The ministry has completed negotiations on poultry product trade with new markets such as Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Canada, which would help boost exports this year, he said. Chalermchai said another factor underpinning increasing foreign orders is the result of the ministry’s campaign to help manufacturers achieve international standards in food safety, including Good Agricultural Practices certification, Good Hygiene Practices, and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points, which have helped the country penetrate new markets. Of the 1.01 million tonnes of livestock products exported, 415,348 were meat and processed meat, 366,317 pet food, 125,077 tonnes of eggs, dairy products and canned food and 107,868 tonnes of farm animal feed. Thailand’s largest markets in the first five months of the year were the European Union, the United States, Japan and the United Kingdom.

FTI says country needs to step up EV developmentThailand must speed up its electric vehicle (EV) development to stay ahead of Indonesia if it still wants to become a regional EV production hub, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI). While Thailand is good at manufacturing cars and auto parts, Indonesia is rich in the resources required to serve the EV industry. "We have to step up efforts to develop our EV industry, taking advantage of our strength as a centre of car production and supply chains." Its major car production status has long earned it the moniker "the Detroit of Asia". EV sales have continued to grow in Thailand, with EV bookings rising to around 10,000 units a year, compared with around 1,000 units a year in Indonesia, said Mr Kriengkrai.

Fighting global hunger properlyThe global food system is broken. A globally coordinated effort to address both the short- and long-term aspects of the hunger crisis must therefore be the top priority. By disrupting global trade and pushing up food prices, these four "Cs" are creating a short-term challenge of increasing hunger. Overconsumption of cheap calories, enabled by global trade in commodities and fossil fuel-based inputs, has led to widespread obesity and caused severe environmental problems. Again, it is vital that immediate responses to the current hunger crisis also support the long-term transformation of our food systems.
