‘To realize it happened to someone you love ... it’s devastating.’ Family remembers the terrible day of Yonge Street van attack on fifth anniversary

Nick D’Amico still remembers the shock when he found out his sister, Anne Marie, was one of the victims of the Yonge Street van attack. “I was thinking back to (the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in Saskatchewan) because it was shortly before this happened. That’s what she is for me and for my family.”Sunday’s commemoration featured speeches from Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie, Willowdale Coun. Amaresh Tesfamariam was one of the 16 people injured in the attack; she died of her injuries in October 2021. While people remain heartbroken over the tragedy, McKelvie said it was wonderful to see the community come together.
