Nahid Islam, convenor of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has reiterated the party’s position that “Major Zia” declared Bangladesh’s independence from Chattogram in 1971. “We know that Major Zia declared independence from Chattogram in 1971. “The declaration of independence came from Kalurghat in Chattogram,” he said, dubbing the port city as the gateway to the country’s “independence and sovereignty”. He also alleged that international forces were targeting the port city. “The Jatiya Nagorik Party will strengthen Chattogram.”Nahid concluded his remarks with a slogan in Chattogram’s regional language: “We have declared this Chattogram the people’s Chattogram, the citizens’ Chattogram.”
