Now, a quarter of a century later, thousands of Ukrainian children have fled another Russian assault, with or without parents, on trains that took them to an unknown destination. Hundreds of children have been killed by Russian forces since President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine. But Putin’s war on children began much earlier. Foreigners seeking Russian children could only adopt those with disabilities. Today, in Ukraine, Putin has once again used children as hostages in his ruthless war to destroy and depopulate the country, bombing buildings sheltering children, including a maternity hospital.
