As demonstrations continued, there were eruptions of violence which led to deaths and the closure of public and private universities. Two journalists reportedly were killed, and many others injured, while hundreds of people were arrested amidst the protests. Prompt, thorough, independent and impartial investigations in line with internationally recognized standards must be carried out into all human rights violations, they added. To regain public trust, the Government needs to take responsibility and ensure a credible process of investigation and accountability to hold perpetrators to account, they said.
