Trudeau expressed his frustration, saying he believes its wrong for Google to prevent Canadians from accessing news, rather than paying journalists for their work. Laurentian University professor April Lindgren said the blocking of news content was “unprecedented” and suggested it was started in response to Bill C-18 passing its second reading in the Senate. The proposed law would require Google and Facebook‘s parent company, Meta, to pay Canadian news publishers and broadcasters for the news articles shown on their platforms. Money gained from this could cover a third of news content creation costs in Canada. Altogether, Trudeau’s disapproval proves that it is of utmost importance in Canada to ensure that journalists are respected and appropriately compensated for their work.
