Today in Canada’s Political History: Olive Diefenbaker passes into historyJohn Diefenbaker’s second wife, Olive (Freeman) died in Ottawa on this date in 1976. She was 74, and had been married to Diefenbaker for almost a quarter-of-a-century. In the 1950s, she met John Diefenbaker again, and the pair were married in 1953. Most historians would agree it is unlikely he would reached Canada’s highest political office without her beside him. A resident of Kingston, Ontario, Milnes serves as the in-house historian at the 175 year-old Frontenac Club Hotel.
