Officially, tens of thousands of Ontarians have said no to opening up the Greenbelt for development. Last week, the province published a synopsis of the letters received in response to its decision to allow 7,400 acres of environmentally sensitive Greenbelt land to be used to build 50,000 homes. “Overall, there was strong support for continued Greenbelt protections and broad opposition to any removals or redesignation of lands under the Greenbelt Plan. It’s the relatively mundane details of infrastructure — or the lack thereof — that could put a wrench in the province’s plans. But the affected cities say those Greenbelt lands were never meant to be developed and were never included in any long-term infrastructure development plans.
