The virus behind COVID-19 is mutating and immune-evasive. Here's what that means

As COVID-19 approaches its fourth year, Omicron continues to mutate and become more immune-evasive, health officials say. In December, the World Health Organization said variants descending from Omicron show more capacity to escape our immune system. A mutation is a change in the genetic code of the COVID-19 virus. Or the mutation could be harmful to the virus if your immune system gains an advantage over the pathogen. Despite the advantages of the immune system and vaccinations, about 50 Canadians a week continue to die of COVID-19.
