Located at the north of Kharga Oasis is the temple of Hibis, a well-preserved site dedicated to Amun. A lake once surrounded the temple but no longer exists. Its foundations date to the 25th Dynasty, with some of its walls decorated by the Persian king Darius, and later rulers. ‎‏The temple's carvings are distinct in style and themes: one scene stands out in which the god Seth battles the serpent Apophis, a symbol of chaos.
