May Moncur is taking a Human Rights Review Tribunal case against the Chinese media company SkyKiwi, saying they have breached her human rights by banning her from their message boards. Being banned from an internet message board may seem an irritating trifle, but for May Moncur, it meant so much she’s taking it to the Human Rights Review Tribunal (HRRT). Moncur believes SkyKiwi is self-censoring, removing anything which might offend the Chinese government - including messages about democracy and human rights. Human rights barrister Graeme Edgeler says Moncur has an “arguable” case but HRRT cases are slow moving and can take two years to resolve.
