The Supreme Court has officially scheduled January 26, 2024, as the date for delivering its judgment in the appeal filed by Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives who is currently serving a prison sentence. Joseph Daudu, Lawan’s Counsel and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, initially urged the court to consider the bail application, expressing concerns about his client’s health. In his arguments, Daudu pointed out that the Court of Appeal had acquitted Lawan on counts one and two, which carried a maximum sentence of seven years. On the other side, Bagudu Sanni, representing the Federal Government, urged the court to affirm the Court of Appeal’s judgment and dismiss the appeal. The Court of Appeal had previously reduced Lawan’s initial maximum prison term from seven to five years.
