In 2005, he faced down a cultural titan when he took The Office, one of the UK’s greatest and most influential sitcoms, and remade it in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Yet it found its groove and became a phenomenon in its own right, racking up 201 episodes, countless awards and making superstars of its cast. Now, Daniels is attempting to defy the odds again with The Paper (Sky Max), a spin-off of his all-conquering The Office, set in a dying regional newspaper in Toledo, Ohio. Now, its four remaining staff, who mainly pump out unreadable clickbait, are an inconvenience to its parent company, which mainly pumps out toilet paper. He’s nice to have around, but you’re never sure what he’s doing there.
