June 21 was National Indigenous Peoples Day across Canada. There is far more to National Indigenous Peoples Day than just a good fish fry. In a territory where half the population is Indigenous, it is embarrassing to remember that Third World conditions are the status quo in many NWT communities. We need programs that serve the people whose land this is… programs that give them hope; programs that honour who they are and not change them into something more like ourselves. Yes, Aboriginal Day is a day of celebration, but also a day for us to reflect on the work that still needs to be done.
