Canada’s Northwest Territories (NWT) held a general election today, the first since 2019. It was delayed from October 3 due to the extensive forest fires in the Territories and the consequent evacuations. There are no political parties at the territorial level, although there are at the federal level. NWT made history in 2019 when it elected nine women members to its 19-member Legislature. This is the highest percentage of women in any state, provincial, or territorial government in North America.
