Unmetered Band A customers in Nigeria are to be the first tranche of electricity customers to receive meters as the government looks to up revenue generation in the sector. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently approved the use of N21 billion (around $13.5m) for electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to fit meters within a specified timeline. “The installation of contracted volume meters shall be completed within 60 days from the date of approval of the process by the Commission, and all contracts for the supply and installation of meters shall be filed with the Commission,” said NERC. The NERC order follows last month’s Senate approval of President Bola Tinubu’s request for sign-off on a $500 million World Bank loan to increase the supply of electricity meters across the country.
